Synthesis of a Homogeneously Porous Solid Oxide Matrix with Tunable Porosity and Pore Size

Abstract: Porous ceramics are a technologically important branch of functional materials for a variety of physical and chemical systems. The properties of porous ceramics depend critically on porosity, pore morphology, pore size, and distribution. In this study, we demonstrate the synthesis of a homogeneously porous samarium‐doped cerium (Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9, SDC) matrix with tunable porosity and pore size via sacrificial template method. The study explicitly shows that the porosity and pore size of the resultant porous matr… Show more

“…The initial flux increase was probably due to a gradual loss of carbonate, which may make the effective thickness of the membrane gradually smaller with time. [29][30][31] Overall, the degradation rate is relatively small; the flux density remains >0.12 ml·min −1 ·cm −2 even after 100 hours. Our most recent study has shown that the loss of carbonate can be mitigated by modifying the surface of oxide matrix with Al 2 O 3 as the latter has a full wettability with molten carbonates and thus increases membrane's ability to immobilize molten carbonates inside the porous ceramic skeleton.…”

“…30 Details about the procedure can be found in our previous work. 30,31 CO 2 permeation measurement.-The CO 2 permeation measurements on MOCC membranes were performed using a homemade test station and established test protocol, both of which can also be found in our previous work. [29][30][31] The button cell membranes used to evaluate the permeation flux have a diameter of 17 mm, thickness of 1.2 mm, and effective area of 0.921 cm 2 .…”

“…Particularly, developing a combination of multiferrioc and porous ceramics is desired. Porous ceramics have a variety of applications in filters, water purification, sorbents, catalysis, biomedical devices, gas separation membranes, chemical sensors, lightweight structural materials, components in the batteries, and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) [13][14][15]. There are several processing routes for fabrication of porous ceramics [15].…”
