“…In other species, spermatozoa incubated with 17‐P produce either mainly 17,20α‐P including: P. platessa (Canario & Scott, 1990), greasy grouper Epinephelus tauvina (Forsskål) (Tan et al , 1995), C. carpio (Asahina et al , 1990; Barry et al , 1990 b ) and C. auratus (Asahina et al , 1993; Ebrahimi et al , 1996). There are other species in which the spermatozoa convert 17‐P to a range of steroids including: roughly equal amounts of 17,20α‐P and 17,20β‐P in flounder Platichthys flesus (L.) (Asahina et al , 1994), a range of 5β‐pregnanes, 17,20α‐P and a trace of 17,20β‐P in male E. coioides (Lee et al , 1998), and a mixture of 17,20β‐P, 17,20α‐P, 11‐KT and androstenedione in R. rutilus , with, however, exclusive production of 17,20α‐P in the presence of excess 17‐P (Ebrahimi et al , 1995).…”

“…Spermatogenesis in teleosts, as in other vertebrates, involves a complex interaction of various hormones along the brain-pituitary-gonad axis (Degani et al , 1998;Lee et al ., 1998). One of these hormones is gonadotropin (GtH), a glycoprotein consisting of two subunits, α and β , which are non-covalently bound.…”

“…Therefore, male groupers have become the limiting factor for mass production of grouper fry and large-scale aquaculture of the commercial fish. Sex inversion has been successfully induced by the implantation of 17 α-methyltestosterone, but there is poor spermiation in the precocious secondary males (Lee et al, 1998). Previous studies on grouper reproductive biology were mainly focused on the gonad ultrastructure and histology at different developmental stages (Lee et al, 1998;Yeh et al, 2003b), but little molecular information was known with regard to the sex inversion.…”
