Synthesis, NMR relaxation, and photoisomerization of amphiphilic polyelectrolytes covalently tethered with azobenzene moieties having bulky hydrophobic substituents

Abstract: Amphiphilic terpolymers [consisting of 50 mol % of sodium sulfonate groups, 49.5 mol % of lauryl (La) or cyclododecyl (Cd) groups, and 0.5 mol % of a moiety of azobenzene substituted with a La group (Abz-La) or with a Cd group (Abz-Cd)] were prepared. Reference copolymers [consisting of 99.5 mol % of sodium sulfonate groups and 0.5 mol % of the Abz-La or Abz-Cd residue] were also prepared. In the terpolymers, the Abz-La and Abz-Cd residues were incorporated in the self-organized hydrophobic phases in aqueous s… Show more

“…The broadening effect is particularly visible in the 19 F-spectra. This behavior points to a reduced mobility due to hydrophobic aggregation in aqueous media, as observed for many other hydrophobized water-soluble polymers [21][22][23][24]. But noteworthy despite their strong broadening, fluorine signals are still observed, in contrast to reports on polyacrylamides with low contents of fluorocarbon groups [25].…”

“…Analysis by 1 H NMR gave the ratios of AMPS units to n-octadecyl group, calculated from the area of the broad singlet at 2.21 ppm, attributed to the resonance of main-chain methine protons, 23,13 and the area of the triplet centered at 0.88 …”
