Synthesis in a gel and sorption properties of N-2-sulfoethyl chitosan

Abstract: Abstract-A new procedure was developed for preparation of chelate amino-containing polymer N-2-sulfoethyl chitosan by synthesis in a gel through the reaction between chitosan and sodium 2-bromoethanesulfonate, yielding a polymer with the degree of substitution of up to 0.5. The structure of the resulting polymers was confi rmed by 1 H NMR spectroscopy. The sorption characteristics with respect to transition and alkaline-earth metal ions were determined for the cross-linked polymers. DOI: 10.1134/S1070427213020… Show more

“…We found, judging from the maximum sorption capacity, that the optimal solutions for recovery of the metal ions are ammonia and ammonia-acetate buffer solutions with pH 6.5-9.0 for Cu(II), 7.0-9.5 for Ni(II), and 7.5-10.0 for Co(II), which was confi rmed in [26,27]. It was shown in [28] that Cu(II) ions are present in dilute solutions as hydrated ions at pH < 6.0, and Ni(II) and Co(II) ions, at pH values smaller than 7.0 and 7.5, respectively.…”

“…[13][14][15] In this regard, especially chitosan ethylsulfonate has been in the focus of recent contributions due to its facile synthetic access and promising application prospects as heavy metal adsorber [16][17][18][19] or potential anticoagulant. 13 Two synthetic strategies have been so far used to convert chitosan into its sulfoethyl ether: reactions in gel state [16][17][18][19] or heterogeneous conversions in organic solvents. 13,15 In gel state, chitosan is modified regioselectively at the amine groups realizing an average DS with sulfoethyl groups (DS SE ) of up to 1.0.…”
