Synthesis, crystallography, microstructure, crystal defects, and morphology of BixZn1−xO nanoparticles prepared by sol–gel technique

Abstract: This study was allocated to synthesis BixZn1−xO (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.06) nanoparticles. In addition, to study the microstructural properties, crystal imperfections and the morphology for these samples.

“…Analyzing the X-ray peak profiles with the (W–H) method enables estimation of the crystallite size (i.e., coherently diffracting domains) and the lattice strain (i.e., the lattice parameters arising from crystal imperfections) by studying the peak width as a function of detector angle 2-Theta [32,33].…”

“…Equation (4) assumes that the sample has an isotropic nature and the micro-strain is uniform in all ( hkl ) crystallographic planes. This equation represents the uniform deformation model (UDM) where the crystal is considered isotropic in nature [32,33].…”

“…58,60,65,77 The reduction in the coherent domain size is mainly attributed to the distortion in the ZnO structure by the incorporation Gd 3+ ions which decrease the nucleation and subsequent growth rate of ZnO-NRs. Besides, the dislocation density (d) was estimated employing the formula below, 78 where D is the coherent domain size. This provides more understanding of the concentration of defects in the nanostructures.…”

“…Silicon powder was utilized to correct this influence. The instrument peak broadening of the studied MgO-NPs can be rectified according to Gaussian (strain effect), and Lorentzian (size effect) distributions [29].…”

“…Dislocation density augments with impurities where it is anticipated to disturb the physicochemical properties of the synthesized products. At this end, it is important to investigate dislocation density (ρ), which is defined as the length of dislocation lines per unit volume and can be estimated using the Williamson-Smallman equation, as given below [29,33]:…”
