Synthesis, crystal structure, and valence states of Mn-substitutedLa2RuO5

Abstract: Polycrystalline samples of layered perovskite-related La 2 Ru 1−y Mn y O 5 (0 y 0.25) were prepared by a soft-chemistry synthesis based on the thermal decomposition of a citrate precursor. The crystal structures of the compounds were determined by Rietveld analysis of x-ray diffraction patterns recorded at different temperatures. Additional neutron diffraction patterns for La 2 Ru 0.75 Mn 0.25 O 5 were recorded between 1.5 K and 300 K. A structural phase transition from a monoclinic room-temperature to a tricl… Show more

“…For y = 0.25, it was shown in Ref. [36] that only a fraction of the sample transforms to the lt structure, while about 55% remains in the ht modification (marked by the white shaded area in Fig. 11).…”

“…The paramagnetic moments increase almost linearly as a function of manganese concentration. With a valence of +4 for both ruthenium and manganese ions, as earlier determined by x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements [36], paramagnetic moments of 2.83 μ B for ruthenium (S = 1) and 3.87 μ B for manganese ions (S = 3 2 ) are calculated. The theoretical expectation is shown as a solid line in Fig.…”
