The first synthesis and characterization of cobalt(II) and copper(II) complexes with an in situ prepared novel asymmetric trinitrogen isoindoline-based pincer type ligand, N-(2-picolyl)isoindoline-1-(2-picolyl)imine (pap), are reported. Single-crystal X-ray structures of the cis-[M(pap)Cl 2 ] (M ¼ Cu, Co) complexes reveal the presence of rare seven-membered chelate rings as well as various coordination geometries and packing modes. The water-soluble complexes were found to react with dicarboxylate ions, terephthalate (ta) and succinate (suc), forming three new compounds {[M(H 2 O)(pap)] 2 (m-ta)}$ta$xH 2 O (M ¼ Cu and Co) and {[Co(pap)(suc)]$xH 2 O} n . Their single-crystal X-ray structures are reported and discussed. The rigid ta ions facilitate the formation of binuclear hydrated supramolecular frameworks, whereas the flexible suclinker binds [Co(pap)] 2+ moieties into 1D zigzag chains. The chains are non-covalently organized into a supramolecular network. The bulky pincer ligand, responsible for the luminescent properties, was found to be inert in these reactions and to facilitate a unique supramolecular architecture through p-p stacking interactions. A novel one-dimensional Cu(II) coordination polymer, catena-poly[bis(μ(4)-3-{[2-(3-hydroxy-2-oxidobenzylidene)hydrazinylidene]methyl}benzene-1,2-diolato)dimethanoltricopper(II)], [Cu(3)(C(14)H(10)N(2)O(4))(2)(CH(3)OH)(2)](n), (I), was constructed with a di-Schiff base supported centrosymmetric trinuclear Cu(II) subunit. In the subunit, two peripheral symmetry-related Cu(II) cations have square-pyramidal CuNO(4) geometry and the central third Cu(II) cation lies on an inversion centre with octahedral CuN(2)O(4) geometry. In (I), each partially deprotonated di-Schiff base 3-{[2-(3-hydroxy-2-oxidobenzylidene)hydrazinylidene]methyl}benzene-1,2-diolate ligand (Hbcaz(3-)) acts as a heptadentate ligand to bind the Cu(II) centres into chains along the a axis. A centrosymmetric Cu(2)O(2) unit containing an asymmetrically bridging O atom, being axial at one Cu atom and equatorial at the other Cu atom, links the trinuclear Cu(II) subunit into a one-dimensional chain, which is reinforced by intramolecular phenol-methanol O-H...O and methanol-phenolate O-H...O hydrogen bonds. Interchain π-π stacking interactions between pyrocatechol units, with a distance of 3.5251 (18) Å, contribute to the stability of the crystal packing.

We obtained the azo‐imine ligand (2,2′‐[4‐(5‐methoxy salicylidene‐4‐iminophenylazo)phenylimino]diethanol) (HL) and its Cu (II) complex (CuL) from the ethanol solution. The complex Cu(L)2 was obtained as single crystals from the CH3OH solution and structurally characterized. The electronic and photoluminescence properties of the ligand and its Cu (II) complex were investigated both in DMF solution and solid state. The oxidation and reduction behaviours of the compounds were studied in the solution and found that the redox processes are irreversible. Thermal studies show that the ligand has higher thermal stability than the CuL complex. Single crystals of the complex were obtained from slow evaporation of a DMF solution of the complex. Crystals of the complex showed a diffraction pattern; however, the structure of the complex was able to be solved.
