A novel Schiff base ligand, namely 2,2′‐((1E,1′E)‐(1,3‐phenylenebis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))diphenol (H2L), was synthesized by condensation of m‐phenylenediamine and 2‐hydroxybenzaldehyde (in 1:2 ratio). Series of complexes were obtained from the reaction of La(III), Er(III) and Yb(III) chlorides with H2L. The ligand and complexes were characterized using elemental analysis, infrared, 1H NMR, UV–visible and mass spectroscopies, magnetic susceptibility and conductivity measurements and thermal analysis. Infrared and 1H NMR spectra indicated the coordination of the azomethine nitrogens and deprotonated phenolic oxygen atoms in a tetradentate manner (ONNO). The thermal behaviour of the complexes was studied from ambient temperature to 1000°C. The complexes were found to have water molecules of hydration and coordinated water molecules. The complexes were found to possess high biological activities against various organisms compared to the free ligand (Gram‐positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis, Gram‐negative bacteria Salmonella sp., Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and fungi Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans). The more effective and probable binding modes between H2L with different active sites of colon cancer (PDB code: 2hq6) and lung cancer (PDB code: 1x2j) receptors were investigated using molecular docking studies.

Binding parameters of metal complexes with albumins and DNA since the middle of 1990s are considered and summarized. The most widespread spectroscopic methods of estimation of binding parameters are discusseddirect fluorescent methods, indirect fluorescent methods (by fluorescence quenching parameters), and ways of estimation of binding constants by other optical spectroscopic methods. The methods and approaches to calculations used for the determination of binding constants are discussed. The interaction of norgestrel with human serum albumin (HSA) was investigated by spectroscopy and molecular-docking methods. Results of spectroscopy methods suggested that the quenching mechanism of norgestrel on HSA was static quenching and that the quenching process was spontaneous. Negative values of thermodynamic parameters (ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS) indicated that hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces dominated the binding between norgestrel and HSA. Three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum and circular dichroism spectrum showed that the HSA structure was slightly changed by norgestrel. Norgestrel mainly bound with Sudlow site I based on a probe study, as confirmed by molecular-docking results. Competition among similar structures indicated that ethisterone and norethisterone affected the binding of norgestrel with HSA. CH3 in R1 had little effect on norgestrel binding with HSA. The surface hydrophobicity properties of HSA, investigated using 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid, was changed with norgestrel addition.
