Synthesis, characterization, and water sorption properties of new aromatic polyamides containing benzimidazole and ethylene oxide moieties

Abstract: New polyamides, containing a benzimidazole side group and ethylene oxide moieties in the structural repeat unit, were synthesized by low‐temperature polycondensation. The aim of this design was to obtain polyamides that were more soluble in common organic solvents and hence had better processability than benzimidazole polyamides while maintaining the water sorption properties characteristic of the latter. The results showed that the number of ether linkages of the repeat unit played an important role in the gl… Show more

“…In the second step, 5-(2-benzimidazole)-1,3-phenylenediamine (4) was achieved with hydrazine hydrate as the reducing agent and palladium as the catalyst. [48][49][50] Construction of N-trimellitylimido-L-leucine (5) Diacid monomer 5 was prepared by the condensation reaction of one equimolar of (trimellitic anhydride) TMA and one equimolar of the natural amino acid L-leucine in refluxing acetic acid according to our previous work. 47 …”

“…Several approaches were reported to synthesize soluble PIs including introduction of flexible linkage and heteroaromatic rings into the polymer backbone [30]. The benzimidazole rings with heteroaromatic structure have excellent stabilities derived from its molecular symmetry and aromaticity, so the incorporation of benzimidazole group into PI backbone would improve the solubility without deterioration of their own excellent properties [31][32][33].…”

“…The introduction of flexible chains into the polyamide backbone [3], synthesis of PAs with noncoplaner unit in the polymer chains [4], preparation of copolymers such as poly(amide-imide)s [5][6][7][8], poly (ester-imide)s [9], and poly(amide-ester-imide)s, [10] and the introduction of bulky side groups into the polymer chains [11][12][13] resulted in a series of modified PAs.…”
