Synthesis, Characterization and Swelling Characteristics of Graft Copolymerized Isotactic Polypropylene Film

Abstract: Grafted membranes were prepared through chemical graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto isotactic polypropylene film (IPP). The IPP films were grafted with MMA molecules resulting in IPP-g-MMA grafts using benzoyl peroxide as an initiator in an inert nitrogen atmosphere. Using this method, the degree of grafting and morphology could be controlled through the variation of reaction parameters such as initiator concentration, monomer concentration, reaction time, and the reaction temperature. “…These results were similar to other study, which also reported that at low temperature, the redox reaction between potassium persulphate and SPI was slow; however, at elevated temperature, redox reaction became easier and copolymerization GP% increased. 52 , 67 The GP% decreased beyond optimum temperature (80 °C) because termination reaction between radicals and homo polymerization was enhanced.…”

“…A bismuth/manganese alloy ion source was used to form the bismuth ions in a "high-current bunched mode" with an ion beam of energy 25 keV and a bunch width less than 1 ns. All TOF-SIMS negative-ion mode spectra gathered with a typical mass resolution of 6000 M per ∆M (determined at 30 Si m/z), all spectra were calibrated to the characteristic ranging from mass 1 to 96 AMU (…”

“…A wide variety of methods to change polymers' surface roughness and composition have been attempted, including solvents [29,30], hot press [31], graft treatments [32,33], plasma [34], and abrasion [35]. While all of these methods are useful in many situations, there does not yet exist a simple process to prepare a pristine polymeric surface in a vacuum system.…”

“…The degrees of grafting of the prepared polymer conjugates are shown in Table 1 as previously described. 68,69 Grafted polymer conjugates revealed a reasonable grafting degrees ranging within 26%-58%. Among all-polymer conjugates, F I G U R E 3 1 H-NMR spectra of polymers P-3A, P-3B, P-4, and P-5 polymers P-4 and P-5 showed the highest degree of grafting.…”
