“…The radiation processing has several advantages such as the simultaneous crosslinking and sterilization in one step and the easy control of physical properties of hydrogels by combining dose with polymer composition; it allows fabricating a pure and human-friendly product noncontaminated with ballast materials or the residuals of toxic initiators [30]. Irradiation technique was successfully reported by some researchers to synthesize superabsorbent hydrogels, some were using gamma-irradiation [24], [25], [30], [31], blue and green LED irradiations [32], microwave irradiation [26], and electron beam irradiation [33]. The aim of this research is to synthesize the superabsorbent hydrogel from chitosan and partially neutralized the acrylic acid by using the gamma-irradiation method.…”

“…The PEI(1a) hydrogel is rapidly highly swellable and possesses pores that are much larger (10–20 μm diameter) than the bacterial size so that they do not easily clog. The PEI(1a) hydrogel becomes fully hydrated relatively quickly (in 15 min) as compared to the much slower swelling kinetics of many other hydrogels , which may take hours or even days to reach equilibrium swelling. The rapid swelling of these hydrogels is attributable to the hydrophilicity of both PEG and the star PEI polymer which has high density of protonated amines (−NH 3 + ), the low cross-link density of the hydrogel network, and the high porosity of the hydrogel.…”

“…For example, similar to organic photoinitiators, the polymerization of hydrogels with CdS as photoinitiators have shown that their concentration affects the swelling of the polymer. 69 However, due to the photocatalytic mechanism of action of the nanocrystals, which results in a unique radical initiation profile, further research is required to provide an in-depth understanding of the contribution of the photoinitiation and fillers roles on the final polymer properties. The above-mentioned early studies paved the way for the evolution of quantum photoinitiators.…”

“…Notably, the effect of the nanocrystal concentration on the final polymer properties is not solely a factor of their role as fillers, but also a result of their action as photoinitiators. However, due to the photocatalytic mechanism of action of the nanocrystals, which results in a unique radical initiation profile, further research is required to provide an in-depth understanding of the contribution of the photoinitiation and fillers roles on the final polymer properties.…”
