Synthesis, characterization, and reactivity ratios of copolymers derived from 4‐nitrophenyl acrylate and n‐butyl methacrylate

Abstract: Free-radical copolymerization of 4-nitrophenyl acrylate (NPA) with n-butyl methacrylate (BMA) was carried out using benzoyl peroxide as an initiator. Seven different mole ratios of NPA and BMA were chosen for this study. The copolymers were characterized by IR, 1 H-NMR, and 13 C-NMR spectral studies. The molecular weights of the copolymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography and the weight-average (M w ) and the numberaverage (M n ) molecular weights of these systems lie in the range of 4.3-5.3 ϫ … Show more

“…On one hand, the toxicity of trichlorophenol limited the use of TCP-based polymers, while on the other hand, the hydrolytic susceptibility of NHB-based polyesters raised the question of their long lasting stability. Rejmanova and Kopecek copolymerized a new class of methacrylate monomer, p -nitro phenyl methacrylate (PNPMA) (Table ), with N -(2-hydroxypropyl)-methacrylamide (HPMA) under free radical polymerization. However, incorporation of PNPMA within the copolymer resulted in a low polymerization yield as also observed by Okawara et al for poly(styrene- co -PNPA) . For a series of copolymers of p -nitrophenyl acrylate (PNPA) with styrene, methyl acrylate, and N,N -dimethylacrylamide (DMA), the rate of aminolysis was studied in dioxane and chlorobenzene .…”

“…NMR spectroscopy is the most efficient technique for the characterization of the stereochemical structures36–41 of copolymers. Recently, the microstructural determination of methyl methacrylate/ n ‐butyl acrylate copolymers,42 synthesized by ATRP, has been performed withtwo‐dimensional (2D) NMR techniques.…”

“…For this purpose various kinds of synthesis strategies have been developed, e.g, protonization, complexation of metals, Dies-Alder reaction, bimolecular reaction, among others [5][6][7]. Nucleophilic substitution is a fundamental class of substitution reactions in which an "electron rich" nucleophile selectively bonds or attacks the positive or partially positive charge of an atom attached to a group or atom called as leaving group; the positive or partially positive atom is referred to as an electrophile [8][9][10][11].…”
