Synthesis, characterization, and kinetics of thermal degradation of copolyesters

Abstract: Random terephthalate copolyesters of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol (1 ,2-propanediol) with various contents of monomeric units of the diols were prepared by transesterification. The actual content of each monomeric unit in the copolyester was determined by 'H NMR. The thermal behaviour of the copolyesters was studied by differential thermal analysis. Kinetic order, heat and entropy of fusion, and activation energy for the thermal degradation of the copolyesters, were obtained. 0025-1 16X/83/$03 .OO

“…For comparison, the compositions were also determined from the integration areas of the center methylene proton in the 3G moiety at w2.3 ppm relative to the methylene proton in the 2G moiety at w4.8 ppm [10]. The results from the 1 H NMR spectra are tabulated in columns 7 and 8 of Table 3, which are within the experimental error of those observed in the 13 C NMR spectra.…”

“…Up to now, the synthesis and characterization of poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-trimethylene terephthalate) (PET/PTT) copolyesters were reported in a few articles [9][10][11][12][13][14]. Most of these copolyesters were crystallizable, but some were amorphous depending on the compositions [9][10][11]13,14].…”

“…Because of its outstanding mechanical properties, PTT has been intensively studied in recently years. [2][3][4][5][6][7] PTT has gradually been used in many fields, such as textile, non-woven fabric, engineering plastic and so on. As a textile material, PTT has become more interesting owing to its outstanding chemical resistance, elastic resilience, better colorableness and colorfastness.…”

“…Poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) is of renewed interest because of a new process for an economical monomer synthesis by Shell Chemical Co. [1][2][3][4] PTT has already shown its outstanding qualities in the fiber industry especially, where it is used in carpet fibers for its outstanding resiliency and stain resistance. PTT is a member of the aromatic polyesters family with the structural formula:…”
