Synthesis, Characterization, and drug release study of acrylamide‐co‐itaconic acid based smart hydrogel

Abstract: A new kind of pH and temperature responsive poly(acrylamide-co-itaconic acid) hydrogel was prepared by free radical polymerization using ammonium persulfate as initiator and different comonomer ratios. The hydrogels were characterized in terms of chemical composition, swellingdeswelling behavior, morphology, crystallographic behavior, and drug release properties. All the hydrogels showed high swelling ability in aqueous solutions, the maximum being at pH 7. Swelling decreased on either side of pH 7 (i.e., both… Show more

“…Interestingly, the presence of two phases during the polymerization in emulsion allowed to solubilize ammonium persulfate in the water phase and by smart combination of i) reducing agents and ii) experimental conditions (surfactant concentration) efficient RFRP in emulsion can be initiated [105][106][107][108][109][110][111]. Compared to BPO, potassium persulfate is particularly interesting for biomedical applications [112].…”

“…With the development of researches on hydrogels, hydrogels are gradually extended to cartilage scaffolds, [1] strain sensors, [2][3][4] tissue-engineered skin scaffolds, [5] medicine, [6,7] soft tissue filling, [8] and smart materials. [9][10][11] As an important component of intelligent hydrogels, shape memory hydrogels (SMHs) can respond to external stimulus. It should be noted that the shape of the hydrogel can be temporarily remained by the following series of operations including adjusting external forces to change the original shape of the hydrogel, stimulating the hydrogel with external environments (such as temperature, [12,13] pH, [14][15][16] light, [17] electricity, [18] magnetic field, [19,20] etc.)…”

“…Itaconate is an established bio-based product with high potential as platform chemical. This chemical and its derivatives already have a widespread application spectrum, for example in the industrial production of fibres, plastics, rubbers and surfactants, but also as bioactive compound in the agriculture, pharmacy or medical sectors (Willke and Vorlop, 2001;Okabe et al, 2009;Betancourt et al, 2010;Bera et al, 2015;De Carvalho et al, 2018;Kuenz and Krull, 2018). The market for itaconic acid is expected to expand in the next years (Weastra, 2012).…”
