Schiff bases are the most widely used versatile ligands, able to coordinate many elements and to stabilize them in various oxidation states. Recently, this class of compounds has been employed as models for biological systems, and in control of stereochemistry in six-coordinate transition metal complexes. Recently, the chemistry of organotin(IV) complexes of Schiff bases has also stemmed from their antitumour, antimicrobial, antinematicidal, anti-insecticidal and anti-inflammatory activities. Furthermore, organotin(IV) complexes of Schiff bases present a wide variety of interesting structural possibilities. Both aliphatic and aromatic Schiff bases in their neutral and deprotonated forms have been used to yield adducts and chelates with variable stoichiometry and different modes of coordination. This critical review (>155 references) focuses upon the chemistry and biological applications of organotin(IV) complexes of Schiff bases reported in the past 15 years. Thermal behavior of these complexes is also discussed.

Some new metal(II) dichloride complexes with the ligands substituted nitrones of the general formula [ML 2 Cl 2 ], where M= Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II), L=OCH=CHCH=C-CH=N(O)C 6 H 4 X (X=H,p-CH 3 ,CH 3 O,CH 3 CO,F,Cl,and Br) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1 H, 13 C NMR and Vis/Uv spectroscopy. The IR spectral data showed that the nitrone ligands coordinated with the metal ion through the most active atom of the N-oxide to give square planner coordinate (Cu,Ni,) complexes and (Zn,Cd,Co) tetrahedral complexes. No correlation was observed between the N-O vibrations stretching high frequency ν (N-O) of the complexes and the Hammet (σ) constants.

Some new tin(IV) compounds of the general formula Sn(SC 6 H 4 R) 4 , where R ¼ o-NH 2 , p-Me, p-Bu-t have been obtained from the direct reaction of (RC 6 H 5 S) 2 and tin metal in the molar ratio 2:1 in refluxing toluene. Similarly, a mixture of tin (RC 6 H 5 S) 2 and iodine in 1.0:1.5:0.5 or 1.0:1.0:1.0 molar ratios in refluxing toluene leads to the formation of Sn(SC 6 H 4 R) 3 I or Sn(SC 6 H 4 R) 2 I 2 , respectively.
