One of the directions of development in the textiles industry is the search for new technologies for producing modern multifunctional products. New solutions are sought to obtain materials that will protect humans against the harmful effects of the environment, including such factors as the activity of microorganisms and UV radiation. Products made of natural cellulose fibers are often used. In the case of this type of material, it is very important to perform appropriate pretreatment before subsequent technological processes. This treatment has the aim of removing impurities from the surface of the fibers, which results in the improvement of sorption properties and adhesion, leading directly to the better penetration of dyes and chemical modifiers into the structure of the materials. In this work, linen fabrics were subjected to a new, innovative treatment being a combination of bio-pretreatment using laccase from Cerrena unicolor and modification with CuO-SiO2 hybrid oxide microparticles by a dip-coating method. To compare the effect of alkaline or enzymatic pretreatment on the microstructure of the linen woven fabrics, SEM analysis was performed. The new textile products obtained after this combined process exhibit very good antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans, significant antibacterial activity against the Gram-negative Escherichia coli and the Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, as well as very good UV protection properties (ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) > 40). These innovative materials can be used especially for clothing or outdoor textiles for which resistance to microorganisms is required, as well as to protect people who are exposed to long-term, harmful effects of UV radiation.

A versatile approach to the synthesis of migration-resistant poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) additives is described and a preliminary assessment of their properties is presented. The process involves the synthesis of AB2 3-mikto-arm stars, star-[PVC-block-(polyB);(polyB)2] or star-[PVC;(polyB)2], that contain a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-synthesized PVC segment, to provide compatibility with PVC and good migration resistance, and multiple RAFT-synthesized segments (polyB), where polyB is based on more activated monomer (a styrene or a methacrylate) that contains the functionality required to impart the desired additive properties. The approach to PVC-based stars comprises three steps: (a) synthesis of a hydroxy-functional PVC [X-PVC(OH) n ] by RAFT polymerization mediated by a hydroxy-functional xanthate [X-(OH) n ], (b) conversion of the X-PVC(OH) n to the corresponding trithiocarbonate, X-PVC-(CDTPA) n , by the Steglich esterification with 4-cyano-4-[(dodecylsulfanylthiocarbonyl)sulfanyl]pentanoic acid (CDTPA), and (c) formation of star polymer additives by RAFT polymerization mediated by X-PVC-(CDTPA) n . The stars prepared include a plasticizer (B = butyl acrylate), a reactive dispersant for use in forming silica nanocomposites (B = 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane), UV stabilizers (B = 2-[3-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-hydroxyphenyl]ethyl methacrylate or 2-hydroxy-4-acryloxybenzophenone), and flame retardants (B = 4-vinylbenzyl phosphonate or (diethoxyphosphoryl)methyl methacrylate). Although much optimization remains to be done, our preliminary study shows that the synthesized mikto-arm star additives can be effective in imparting the anticipated properties to PVC.

Variations, Determinants, and Coexposure Patterns of Personal Care Product Chemicals among Chinese Pregnant Women: A Longitudinal Study

Exposure to mixtures of personal care product chemicals (PCPCs) is commonplace among the Chinese population; yet, limited data are available on the variations, determinants, and coexposure patterns of PCPCs, particularly among pregnant women at multiple time points during gestation. Here, we measured concentrations of 11 most common PCPCs (five parabens, five benzophenones, and triclosan) in 2823 urine samples collected from 941 pregnant women over three trimesters. Based on the quantification results, we calculated the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) to assess within-person variability of targeted compounds, applied linear mixed mode models to explore associations between urinary concentrations of PCPCs and exposure-related factors, and used percentile analysis to evaluate exposure to specific or multiple chemicals at one or three trimesters. Seven targeted compounds: methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), propylparaben (PrP), 4-hydroxybenzophenone (4-OH-BP), 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone (BP-1), 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (BP-3), and triclosan (TCS) were detected in over 66% of samples. The median urinary concentrations (ng/mL) of MeP, EtP, PrP, 4-OH-BP, BP-1, BP-3, and TCS were 15.44, 0.49, 0.61, 0.16, 0.25, 0.53, and 0.48, respectively. We observed that benzophenones (ICC: 0.46–0.55) and triclosan (ICC: 0.50) were less variable than parabens (ICC: 0.35–0.40). Urinary levels of parabens were related to physical activity frequency; urinary levels of benzophenones were associated with the refurbishment of homes and household income, and urinary levels of triclosan were contingent upon the personal basic information (prepregnancy body mass index and age). Notably, higher levels of benzophenones and triclosan but lower paraben levels were observed in summer than in winter. Both coexposure to high percentiles of multiple pollutants at one trimester and exposure to one pollutant at high-dose through three trimesters were rare in the study population. Our findings suggest that these exposure-related factors should be taken into consideration, and health risks should be assessed on mixtures of pollutants in future epidemiological studies.
