Synthesis, characterization and corrosion inhibition potential of two novel Schiff bases on mild steel in acidic medium

Abstract: This study reports the synthesis of new Schiff bases namely 5-((4-chloro-3-nitrophenylimino)methyl)-2-methoxyphenol and 2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidineamino)-4-nitrophenol using solid–liquid phase equilibrium diagram and their characterization.

“…However, the diameter of the capacitive semicircle remarkably increased with the addition of inhibitors indicating that these compounds formed an effective layer on C‐steel. Moreover, Nyquist curves display several inductive loops in the low frequency area, which is related to the relaxation adsorbed molecule of inhibitors on the surface of electrode . The Bode modulus, Figure (1‐b, 2‐b and 3‐b), showed a single time constant, which agreed with the Nyquist plots.…”

“…[32][33][34] In strong corrosive electrolytic media like HCl, H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 and H 3 PO 4 , the heteroatoms of inhibitor molecules (N, O, S, and P) easily undergo protonation because of their unshared electron pairs. [4,[35][36][37] Therefore, in such electrolytic media, inhibitor molecules (or heteroatoms) exist in the cationic/ protonated forms. [38][39][40] On the other hand, metallic surface become negatively charged because of the adsorption of counterions of electrolytes on the positively charged metallic surface.…”

“…In view of the very high safety and economic losses, the several preventive measures have been developed and implemented depending upon the nature of metallic materials and surrounding atmospheres. Out of all implemented methods, use of synthetic corrosion inhibitors is one of the best methods because of their ease of synthesis, economic behavior, ease of implementation, and high effectiveness . Obviously, the synthetic inhibitors associated with high electron (charge) density in form of extended conjugation and polar functional groups such as –CN, –OH, –NH 2 , –OCH 3 , –NO 2 , –COOC 2 H 5 , –O–, –CONH 2 , –SH, –S–S–, –CSNH 2 , –NH–CS–NH–, –NH–SO 2 –, and –PO (–OC 2 H 5 ) 2 offer strong metal‐inhibitor bondings .…”

“…Additionally, HCl is used in oil-well in oil and gas industries, industrial cleaning purposes, acid pickling, and impregnating different metallic compounds [5,6]. These days, the use of synthetic corrosion inhibitors is one of the most reliable, convenient, and handy methods for the protection of mild steel from corrosion in acidic environments, due to convenient and effective synthesis procedures and use; easy-to-achieve, tunable properties; and economical value [7,8].…”
