UV filter agents are essential ingredients in cosmetics and fabrics for rendering the property of protection from harmful UV radiation. The focus of this research was on the development of biocompatible hybrid UV/IR filter agents through sol-gel processing of nano-sized lanthanum titanate, zirconate, and phosphate-based rare-earth materials. 2-Hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (Lawsone) is an ideal candidate, owing to its biocompatibility, for treating the sol of the rare-earth systems to produce inorganic-organic hybrids with classical orange shades. The rare-earth hybrids were characterized by X-Ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis, photo-luminescence, and Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. The results of characterization indicated that the hybrids offer >90% of NIR reflectance in the wavelength region from 700 to 1100 nm. They also exhibited excellent shielding in UV-A and UV-B regions, thus qualifying them as cool colors with useful optical as well as heat management characteristics. The sun protection factor calculated by optical density measurements showed that the synthesized hybrids have potential applications as UV filter agents in sunscreen lotions. The cell viability analyzed by the MTT (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)−2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay affirmed the biocompatibility of the hybrids as none of the systems was found cytotoxic. This study was devoted to exploring the beneficial properties of rareearth-based hybrid systems in pharmacological applications.

Despite extensive industrial use, the biocompatibility of nanocomposites has not been extensively explored. The present study was designed to report the effect of variable doses of a newly synthesized nanocomposite, Neodymium Zirconate Zinc Sulfide, on selective serum and complete blood count parameters and on the oxidative stress markers from the vital organs of albino mice. Albino mice (C57BL/6 strain, 5 weeks old) of both sexes were orally treated for 11 days, either with 10 mg (low dose) or 20 mg/mL saline/kg body weight (high dose) of Neodymium Zirconate Zinc Sulfide nanocomposite. A control group that was not treated with the nanocomposite but with saline solution was also maintained. Data analysis revealed that high-dose nanocomposite-treated male mice had significantly reduced hemoglobin concentration as compared to the control males. Female mice treated with both doses of nanocomposite had higher serum triglyceride levels than controls. High-dose-treated female mice had elevated serum cholesterol concentration compared to their saline-treated controls. Oxidative stress marker analysis from selected organs indicated that concentrations of malonaldehyde (MDA) in the kidney and liver, Superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in the brain and catalase in the kidney of male mice treated with the nanocomposite were significantly higher than in the control group, whereas SOD in the heart, MDA in the heart and kidney and catalase levels in the kidney were significantly disrupted in female mice compared to their respective controls.

Evaluation of nanoparticles (NPs) for biomedical applications has received a lot of attention for detailed study on pharmacokinetics prior to clinical application. In this study, pure C-SiO 2 (crystalline silica) NPs and SiO 2 nanocomposites with silver (Ag) and zinc oxide (ZnO) were prepared by utilizing different synthesis routes such as sol−gel and co-precipitation techniques. The prepared NPs showed highly crystalline nature as confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis where average crystallite sizes of 35, 16, and 57 nm for C-SiO 2 , Ag-SiO 2 , and ZnO-SiO 2 NPs, respectively, were calculated. Fourier transform infrared analysis confirmed the presence of functional groups related to the chemicals and procedures used for sample preparation. Due to agglomeration of the prepared NPs, the scanning electron microscope images showed large particle sizes when compared to their crystalline sizes. The optical properties of the prepared NPs such as absorption were obtained with UV−Vis spectroscopy. For in vivo biological evaluation, albino rats, both male and female, kept in different groups were exposed to NPs with 500 μg/kg dose. Hematological, serum biochemistry, histo-architecture, oxidative stress biomarkers, and antioxidant parameters in liver tissues along with various biomarkers for the evaluation of erythrocytes were estimated. The results on hemato-biochemistry, histopathological ailments, and oxidative stress parameters exhibited 95% alteration in the liver and erythrocytes of C-SiO 2 NPs-treated rats while 75 and 60% alteration in the liver tissues of rats due to exposure to Ag-SiO 2 and ZnO-SiO 2 NPs, respectively, when compared with the albino rats of the control (untreated) group. Therefore, the current study showed that the prepared NPs had adverse effects on the liver and erythrocytes causing hepatotoxicity in the albino rats in respective order C-SiO 2 > Ag SiO 2 > ZnO-SiO 2 . As the C-SiO 2 NPs appeared to be the most toxic, it has been concluded that coating SiO 2 on Ag and ZnO reduced their toxicological impact on albino rats. Consequently, it is suggested that Ag-SiO 2 and ZnO-SiO 2 NPs are more biocompatible than C-SiO 2 NPs.
