Antibiotic resistance by microorganisms has triggered the need to discover new antibiotics to replace the old ones. The study was designed to prepare copper-paracetamol complexes which will serve as lead compounds towards the discovery of novel antibiotics. Copper sulphate was reacted with paracetamol in the presence of sodium nitrate in borate buffer to give products which were separated into three layers when extracted with a set of organic solvents. The topmost, third layer was separated and further washed with 1:1:1 petroleum ether, ethanol and benzene to obtain a yellow extract. The first and second layers were also air dried to obtain products 1 and 2. The maximum wavelength of absorption of products 1, 2, yellow extract and paracetamol were 250, 350, 280 and 300 nm respectively. The infrared absorption peaks suggested that, the metal coordination products formed were different from the reactants (paracetamol and cupper). The atomic absorption spectra of the extracts further indicated the association of copper with paracetamol to form the coordination complexes. Products 1, 3 and the yellow extract inhibited E. coli and staphylococcus growth. In all four products were separated and their possible structures have been proposed in the text.

The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) make up a great group of drugs that provide benefits in the prevention of cancers. Coordinated metal ions with NSAIDs provide advantages over the drugs themselves. The metal complexes of NSAIDs display a range of biological activities quite often inaccessible to the original NSAID ligands. NSAIDs-metal complexes have molecular properties different from those of the parent drugs. Thus, if a given NSAIDs-metal complex remains intact in the biological medium its biological target is [a] She is now a Postdoctoral Fellow of the National Scholarships Foundation of Greece-Siemens program with a fellowship of excellence. Her research interests are mainly focused on bioinorganic chemistry and particularly on the evaluation of the anticancer properties of metal complexes by studying their interaction with intracellular molecules. He graduated from the Chemistry 3049 dentate, bidentate, or bridge ligands in polynuclear complexes.Compounds of NSAIDs with biometals exhibit better pharmacological activity than free NSAIDs. [11] The structural characteristics, medicinal/veterinary properties, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity [SOD is an enzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of the superoxide (O 2 -) radical into both ordinary molecular oxygen (O 2 ) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), thus being involved in the inflammation mechanism], anti-inflammatory, and ulcerogenic effects of Cu-NSAIDs have also been reviewed. [5] The review concluded that the mode of action of the Cu-NSAIDs is similar to that of the traditional NSAIDs and the complexes reduced gastrointestinal toxicity. Moreover, the stabilities of Cu-NSAIDs complexes are a critical determinant of their activity and toxicity. Some metal(II) complexes of the mixed drugs-Aspirin and Vitamin B 2 (Riboflavin) were synthesized and characterized by melting point, conductance, percentage metal measurements, as well as infrared and electronic spectroscopies. The electronic spectra, percentage metal analysis and conductance measurements corroborated octahedral geometry for all the metal complexes. Infrared data confirmed that metal complexes had O 4 chromophores, that is, coordination was via the carbonyl oxygen atoms of the carboxylic acid and acetyl groups of the Aspirin; and hydroxy oxygens in Riboflavin. Furthermore, the room temperature magnetic data suggested that both the Fe(II) and the Ni(II) complexes exhibited spin-crossover, that is, low spin ↔ high spin octahedral equilibrium, while the Mn(II) and Cu(II) complexes exhibited antiferromagnetism respectively. The drugs, Aspirin and Vitamin B 2 , and their metal(II) complexes were generally inactive against E.coli, Enterobacteria sp, Klebsiella sp, Bacillus sp, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas sp and Staphylococcus epidermidis, with the exception of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes which showed some activities against Bacillus sp., Klebsiella sp. and Staphylococcus spp. with inhibitory zones in the range of 6.0 -12.0 mm respectively.
