Synthesis, characterization and adsorption properties of alginate porous beads

Abstract: Original calcium alginate beads with porous structure and high adsorption surface are proposed. The beads were synthesized using sodium alginate in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate as foaming agent, NaCl as porogen agent and CaCl 2 as cross-linker. They were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method. The adsorption capacity of beads was tested with methylene blue (MB). The data show that the adsorption efficiency increases wit… Show more

“…The two typical band of COO − were observed at 1593.88 cm −1 and 1405.85 cm −1 corresponding to the symmetrical and asymmetrical stretching vibrations, respectively (see spectrums B-D and E in Fig. 7) [12,23,[57][58][59]. In the blank calcium alginate microbeads spectrum, a broadband at 3361.32 cm −1 was observed attributed to water molecules (H 2 O).…”

“…Alginate acid as a natural polysaccharide extracted from brown algae possesses many advantages compared to the various polymers adopted for elaborating hydrogel micro and nanobeads [12,[23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. The alginate macromolecule consists of chains of gluconic acid (G-block) and chains of mannuronic acid (M-block) and chains of mixed sequence of M-G-blocks.…”

“…In the case of sodium alginate polymer, the spectrum reveals the presence of a broad vibrational band located at 3268 cm −1 , which is attributed to the stretching of the O-H function. e symmetrical and asymmetrical stretching vibrations of COO − groups were observed at 1593.88 cm −1 and 1405.85 cm −1 , respectively (Figure 3(b)) [6,[26][27][28][29].…”

“…Alginate is a linear non branched polysaccharide obtained from brown marine algae and it mainly consists on linear polymeric chains from α‐l‐guluronic acid and β‐D‐mannuronic acid residues joined by 1,4‐glycosidic linkages . One of the most relevant features of alginate polymers is their ability to form gel structures by reaction with divalent cations such as Ca 2+ . Typical alginate microcapsules can be obtained by extrusion of the alginate‐containing solution in the form of drops over the crosslinking solution with divalent cations such as Ca 2+ , Sr 2+ , Ba 2+ …”
