Synthesis by a single‐step swelling process and characterization of micrometer‐sized polychloromethylstyrene/poly(butyl methacrylate) hemispherical composite particles of narrow size distribution

Abstract: Polychloromethylstyrene (PCMS) micrometer-sized particles of narrow size distribution were prepared by the dispersion polymerization of chloromethylstyrene in a mixture of ethanol and dimethyl sulfoxide. Micrometer-sized PCMS/poly(butyl methacrylate) hemispherical composite particles of narrow size distribution were prepared by a single-step swelling process of the uniform PCMS template particles with emulsion droplets of butyl methacrylate (BMA) containing benzoyl peroxide, followed by the polymerization of B… Show more

“…For purified MWCNTs, peaks at 3434 and 1719 cm −1 refer to the stretching vibration frequency of carboxylic acid groups located at defects and/or ends of the tubes, suggesting that carboxyl groups are introduced onto the walls of the MWCNTs after nitric acid treatment. As is obvious from Figure 3c, PCMS has the characteristic peaks of aliphatic C–H at 3000–2800 cm −1 (stretching vibration) and 1445 cm −1 (deformation vibration), arc–H at 3100–3020 cm −1 (stretching vibration) and 833 cm −1 (deformation vibration), C=C at 1607 and 1507 cm −1 (stretching vibration), C–Cl at 675 cm −1 , and –CH 2 Cl at 1263 cm −1 32, 33. In contrast to purified MWCNTs, in the FTIR spectrum of MWCNT‐PCMS the peak of C=O shifts from 1719 to 1734 cm −1 , the peak at 3434 cm −1 (O–H stretching vibration) almost disappears, and a new peak at around 1204 cm −1 (C–O–C stretching) is observed.…”

“…12 Strategies for making nonspherical particles are being developed to mimic shape and flexibility of innate biological objects to impart architectural characteristics essential for mimicking their biological functions. 13 particles were synthesized by photopolymerization in a microfluidic reactor 14 by the dispersion polymerization of chloromethylstyrene, 15 and by soft lithography. 16 Hemispherical hollow silica microcapsules were produced by the suspension polymerization of methyl methacrylate droplets followed by deposition of SiO 2 powder and removal of the mother particle.…”

“…The size decrease of the swollen particles due to the polymerization step is a well-known phenomenon [31], and takes place probably as a consequence of the removal of excess reagents (e.g., monomers and soluble oligomers) after the completion of the polymerization. nanoparticles as shown in Figure 7C.…”
