Synthesis and swelling properties of a poly(vinyl alcohol)-based superabsorbing hydrogel

Abstract: Superabsorbent hydrogels based on poly(vinyl alcohol) were prepared by a crosslinking technique using glutaraldehyde as a crosslinker. The hydrogel structure was confirmed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results from SEM observation showed a porous structure with smooth surface morphology of the hydrogel. We have systematically optimized the certain variables of hydrogel synthesis (i.e. the crosslinker concentration, poly(vinyl alcohol) content, time and temperature of crosslinking reaction) to achie… Show more

“…Table shows the dependence of the degree of swelling (DS) for pure PVA film and samples with different levels of crosslinking with GA over time at different temperatures. Despite the potential resumption of nisin stabilized by NaCl, which may react with the PVA matrix, the low amount of nisin modifier displayed no notable effect on the degree of swelling of the final polymer films . In the case of the pure PVA film, merely a significant influence was exerted on temperature.…”

“…The crystalline regions and Ti-O-C bonds served as physical and chemical crosslinking points, respectively. The highly crosslinked structure cannot be expanded and it holds a large quantity of water [41].…”

“…The degree of swelling of the hydrogels will also effects on its degree of release but because its release was in PS and not in distilled water therefore they have been shows less degree of swelling in saline solution [48].…”
