Synthesis and Surface Activity of Nonionic Surfactants Derived from Gallic Acid

Abstract: A series of nonionic surfactants were synthesized from gallic acid and polyethylene glycols with different molecular weights. Chemical structures of the surfactants were confirmed using elemental analysis, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H-NMR) spectroscopy. Surface activities of the surfactants in their solutions were determined by surface tension measurements. Increasing the polyethylene glycol chain length increased the surface activity of the surfactants in solutions. Measurements of interfacia… Show more

“…Effectiveness (π cmc ) is a valuable surface activity parameter that could be used to compare the strength of the surface activity of two or more surfactants in the same series. The larger the π cmc value of the aqueous surfactant solution, the higher the surface activity . Herein, 4f had the biggest π cmc value, that is, 43.44 mN m –1 , although all the data were close to each other (43.02–43.44 mN m –1 ).…”

Meanwhile, the adsorption efficiency (pC 20 ) was just a measure of the efficiency of surfactant adsorption on the air−water interface.…”

“…The addition of PEG‐400 to MG leads to increased production of PEG ionic species and 7‐OH deprotonated MG and quinoid MG, which causes interactions between them to form MG‐PEG encapsulated composite. [ 31 ] Then, added HPMC gets crosslinked to the MG‐PEG to form MG‐PEG‐HPMC polymer hybrids. Further addition of liquid electrolyte to MG‐PEG‐HPMC polymer hybrids leads to 7‐OH protonated MG regeneration, and in addition, crosslinking interaction takes place between iodine/iodide and MG‐PEG‐HPMC polymer matrix.…”

“…Their unique molecular structure allows them to have the properties of both anionic and nonionic surfactants, which improve surface properties (Zaho and Zhu, 2003). It also contains cleavable groups; like esters, amide, and ethoxylate groups between hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups, which make it easily hydrolyzed into the primary components (Hellberg, 2003; Lif, 1998; Negm et al, 2015, 2016; Stjerndahl et al, 2003a, b; Stjerndahl and Holmberg, 2005).…”
