Synthesis and Structure Determination of Two Neutral Cadmium Thiophenolate Clusters

Abstract: The polynuclear complexes [Cd8S(SPh)14(DMF)3] (1) and [Cd17S4(SH)2(SPh)24(PPh3)2] (2) were prepared by an organometallic synthesis route. X‐ray diffraction on single‐crystals revealed a hexagonal closed packing of the cluster unit in 1 in the triclinic space group P$\bar{1}$. Compound 2 crystallized in the monoclinic space group C2/c. In contrast to related cluster compounds, the ligand sphere of 1 is expanded resulting in an unusual trigonal‐bipyramidal coordination of one of the cadmium ions. The heterogeneo… Show more

“…Four cadmium atoms (Cd3, Cd2 and symmetry equivalent atoms) bind to sulfur atoms only, while three cadmium atoms (Cd1) bind to three sulfur atoms and one i Pr 3 P ligand. The Cd-P distance (262(2) pm) is in the same range as observed for phosphine stabilized cadmium thiolate complexes [9,10,62]. Six tin atoms are located in the outer sphere of the CdS core which are coordinated by two sulfur atoms and two phenyl groups.…”

“…1 shows the perspective view of the cation in 3·(DMF) 2 . Each cadmium center has a distorted octahedral geometry with N(1)-Cd (1) (1)\S (1) and Cd (1) other cadmium thiolate complexes [12]. It is interesting to note there are hydrogen bonds between N-Hs of thiolate ligands of 3 and oxygen atoms of dimethylformamide (Fig.…”

“…Cadmium thiolate complexes have attracted considerable attention because of their diverse structures [12] and potential use as precursors for semiconductor materials [13] as well as models for metalloproteins [14]. However, to the best of our knowledge, the investigation of cadmium(II) thiolate complexes used as the anion sensors has not been reported.…”
