Synthesis and Structural Studies of (1, 10-Phenanthroline)(thiocyanate-N)-(Triphenylphosphine)copper(i)

Abstract: The compound (l,lO-phenanthroline)(thiocyanate-N)(triphenylphosphine)copper(I), was synthesized and studied by IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. It is monomeric with the thiocyanate acting as a N-donor ligand. The copper atom shows a distorted tetrahedral coordination geometry.

“…In addition it may be noted that N-coordination of the thiocyanate group probably arises from a fine interplay of electronic and steric effects associated both with the tmen and azide ligands coordinated to the copper atom. Finally, in agreement with the general aspects which have already found for coordinated azido [13, 1b] and thiocyanato [14] groups, both are essentially linear, N4AN5AN6 177.0(4)°and SAC1AN1 178.3(4)°. However, the NCS ligand is not quite co-linear with the copper atom since the angle CuAN1AC1 is 161.9(4)°.…”

“…The cyano group is almost linear (Cu-C1-N1 174.81 (2) ). The Cu-P distance is in good agreement with the average value of 2.25(4) Å (see Table II) established for Cu I -PPh 3 complexes [7,[15][16][17][18][19][20]. The N1-C1 bond length of 1.142(3) Å is close to that expected for a CN triple bond [21] and the Cu-C1 bond distance of 1.936(2) Å is in good agreement with literature data [21].…”

“…A structural motif of this kind with monodentate thiocyanate ion is also found in other phosphine-copper(I) complexes, bearing triphenylphosphine-phenanthroline [21], 4,6-dimethylpyrimidine-2(1H)-thione-S [22], bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) [23] and bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) [24].…”
