Twenty-seven carboxamide derivatives of (±)-cis-3-(2,2-dichloroethenyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid (permethrin acid) have been synthesized and evaluated in the laboratory against mosquito larvae (Aedes aegypti). These cis-cyclopropylcarboxamides, with N-(substituted)phenyl, N-(substituted)phenylmethyl, N-(substituted)phenylethyl, N-phenylpropyl, and N-phenylbutyl groups, were synthesized from the acid chloride of permethrin acid and various arylamines in methylene chloride. The samples were characterized by 13C NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Secondary amides with electron-donating (e.g., methoxy) and electron-withdrawing (e.g., trifluoromethyl) substituents on the phenyl ring as well as nine tertiary amides were investigated. 3-(2,2-Dichloroethenyl)-2,2-dimethyl-N-(3-phenoxyphenyl)methylcyclopropanecarboxamide was the most active experimental compound and was 25 times less potent than (±)-cis-permethrin. Cyclopropylcarboxamides of the N-(substituted)phenyl, N-(substituted)phenylethyl, and N-phenylpropyl types were essentially inactive in the larvicidal tests. Extraction and Assay of Proteolytic Activities in Sorghum Malt

A method has been developed to assay the proteinase and carboxypeptidase activities in sorghum malt.The method specifically addresses two problems encountered with some other assays for malt proteolytic activity; that of enzyme inextractability and the ubb of alien substrates. It was found that as with barley malt proteolytic enzymes, a high proportion of sorghum malt proteolytic activity was inextractable with sodium chloride solution. Systematic investigation into the extraction of proteolytic enzymes from sorghum malt led to the development of a novel extractant viz. 0.6 M Lithium iodide Li I plus 3.33 mM dithiothreitol. This extractant appears to solubilize a significantly higher proportion of the malt proteolytic activities with a single extraction than previously used buffers. Assay is carried out Using purified Kafirin, the sorghum prolamin storage protein, as substrate. Proteinase is measured in terms of total nitrogen solubilized and carboxypeptidase as free a-amino nitrogen solubilized.

Effect of heating cast kafirin films on their functional properties

Edible films can be produced from kafirin but the diverse food product requirements necessitate modification of the films. To modify their functional properties, kafirin films were cast, with and without plasticizer, from glacial acetic acid (GAA) and aqueous ethanol (AE), then heated using microwave energy. A power of 80 W for 2 min caused an approximately two-and fourfold increase in the tensile strength of nonplasticized and plasticized films, respectively. Film glass transition temperature increased by about 15%. Film biodegradability was slowed. However, only the digestibility of the non-plasticized films cast from AE heated for the longest time (4 min) was decreased, by about 25%; while that of the other films was not affected. GAA cast films had higher digestibility than AE cast ones, possibly as a result of acid-mediated deamidation of kafirin. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis indicated heat-induced kafirin oligomers. Scanning electron microscopy of heated plasticized films showed more wrinkled structures compared to non-heated films, whereas the non-plasticized films appeared more brittle with heating. The results indicate that heat-induced intermolecular disulfide cross-linking was involved in modifying the properties of kafirin films.
