Synthesis and solid‐state properties of crosslinked alternating copolymers of phenyl vinylethylene carbonate and N‐substituted maleimides

Abstract: The copolymers of phenyl vinylethylene carbonate (PVEC) and N-phenylmaleimide were prepared with various monomer feeds by using a radical initiator. These copolymers were crosslinked by aminolysis between hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) and cyclic carbonate moiety in the side-chain to obtain the networked polymers having the hydroxyurethane structure. Furthermore, the crosslinked copolymers having the polar cyclic carbonate in the side-chain were synthesized from PVEC and several bifunctional maleimides, and their… Show more

“…Since this tautomerization occurred through formation of an enolate intermediate, the presenceo fb ase catalysts, such as TEA, facilitated the process. Cross-linking reactions were performed in THF for4 8h at 50 8C.…”

“…We have previously synthesized monomers bearing five‐membered cyclic carbonate moieties from epoxides having polymerizable groups and carbon dioxide, and have synthesized polymers bearing five‐membered cyclic carbonate moieties in the side chains by radical polymerization, 5,6 anion ring‐opening polymerization, 7 and ring‐opening metathesis polymerization 8 of the synthesized monomers. Furthermore, we and many researchers reported that the networked polymers bearing hydroxy urethane structures as the cross‐linking units can be readily synthesized by addition reactions of cyclic carbonates in the side chain with multifunctional amines, because cyclic carbonates react with amines in a highly efficient and selective manner 6–11 . In method (ii), one of example is the radical copolymerization of a vinyl monomer with a bifunctional vinyl monomer.…”

“…The 5CC-based polymers are a new kind of CO 2 -based functional ones. , They not only possess various properties but also can act as a versatile platform toward functional polymers. For example, Endo et al reported an indirect way to obtain 5CC-based polymers from CO 2 . First, they synthesized a monomeric 5CC with the vinyl group from CO 2 via several steps. Then they used this monomer for further radical polymerization (Scheme ).…”
