Synthesis and Self-Organization of Core-Extended Perylene Tetracarboxdiimides with Branched Alkyl Substituents

Abstract: The influence of the core extension of perylene tetracarboxdiimides on the thermotropic behavior has been investigated. A homologous series of alkyl substituted tetracarboxdiimides, namely, perylene diimide, terrylene diimide, quaterrylene diimide, and coronene diimide, was synthesized. These compounds display absorption maxima in the region of 430-760 nm with high extinction coefficients and show a high thermal stability up to 450 °C. Structural evaluation revealed an identical columnar self-organization for … Show more

“…We note that the weak crystallinity can be inferred from X-ray diffraction studies on bulk branched perylene derivatives. [20][21][22] The packing of alkyl terminated PBI-PA based molecules is dominated by the interaction between the conjugated PBI-PA cores. The π -π stacking of the aromatic cores leads to parallel stacks with a typical distance of 0.36 nm.…”

“…4,5 It is hardly possible to synthesize all compounds in the hope of identifying the one "best suitable" for a particular application. Computer simulation can help to preselect some of the interesting compounds by formulating structure-property (mobility) relations.…”

“…[17] This result provides a tool for tailoring low-bandgap n-type organic semiconductors such as SWQDI. In addition, the introduction of swallow-tailed alkyl chains imparts high solubility to this material and promotes self-assembly into discotic columnar superstructures, [18] as schematically illustrated in Figure 1b. These combined advantages of bandgap modification and excellent solubility make this dye a promising candidate for solution-processed, single-compound ambipolar field-effect transistors.…”
