Synthesis and properties of two kinds of nonlinear optical interpenetrating polymer networks

Abstract: SYNOPSISTwo kinds of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) containing 4-(4'-nitrophenylazo)aniline chromophore groups were synthesized. A polyacrylate network was prepared by polymerization of Dispersed Red-19 (DR-19) diacrylate, whereas an epoxy resin network was formed by reaction of Bisphenol A-type epoxy resin E44 with 4(4'-nitrophenylazo)-3-amino aniline. A polyurethane network was synthesized by reaction between (@-hydroxyl propyl acrylate-DR-1 methacrylate) copolymer and phenol-capped isocynate-termi… Show more

“…Such distortions lead to a decrease of the intramolecular charge transfer upon excitation that explains the increase of the electron transition energy and the hypsochromic shift of the absorption band. This spectral behaviour is consistent with spectral phenomena observed in other crosslinked polymer systems 18,19 .…”

“…The relaxation behaviour of the secondorder NLO properties of the polymers films were studied by monitoring the decay of the order parameter (Φ) as a function of time at 25 °C. The order parameter can be calculated according to equation 18 :…”

“…In an azocarbazole-based polyimide, 10 the remnant of birefringence is very stable at about 97%, even after annealing at 240°C for 1 h. However, crosslinking has been investigated to enhance the stability of the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. Crosslinking with sol-gel, 14,15 thermal or photochemical, 16 -20 or interpenetrating polymer networks [21][22][23][24] has already been carried out with poling in an electric field. The second harmonic generation coefficient of the poled crosslinked NLO polymers containing azobenzene has been main-tained for a long term even at high temperatures after the electric field has been removed.…”
