Synthesis and Properties of Complexes with Unusual {MnIII4} and {MnII4} Cages

Abstract: Two types of manganese complexes with [Mn 4 ] cores featuring the unusual distorted cube topology are presented, the first of which comprises new modifications of the reported complex [Mn III 4 (sao) 4 (saoH) 4 ]·3CHCl 3 : [Mn 4 (sao) 4 (saoH) 4 ]·1.32(C 4 H 10 O)· 0.43(CH 4 O) (1a) and [Mn(sao) 4 (saoH) 4 ]·0.5(CH 4 O)·0.5(C 2 H 3 N) (1b) sao = salicylaldoxime. The second, 0.55[Mn 4 Cl 4 (C 12 H 9 N 2 O) 4 -

“…The molecular structure of the tetranuclear complex 2 is shown in Figure 3 and selected bond parameters are reported in Table 3. The structure of this compound is a polymorph of the 2a· 3.5MeCN complex reported by Brechin and co‐workers8a,8c and is closely related to the chloroform‐ or methanol‐solvated clusters bearing the salicylaldoximato ligand 8b,8d. The structure consists of four Mn III cations that form a pseudo‐cubane cage in which each pentagonal face is defined by one Mn–N–O–Mn and one Mn–O–Mn linkage.…”

“…This topology has already been observed in analogous [Mn III 4 ] complexes6 (Figure 1). Compounds with [Mn II 4 ] cores are also known 6d6f. The central [Mn II 4 ] core is decorated by four [Mn 2 ] dinuclear motifs that can also be seen as related cubane cages with defects (in comparison to the central [Mn II 4 ] cage, Figure 2a,b), in which one vertex is missing and one oxime bridge is substituted by a methoxido bridge.…”

“…The doubly deprotonated ligand of salicylaldoxime (sao 2– ) is potentially a tridentate binucleating ligand, which may be coordinated to the metal ions via its nitrogen and oxygen atoms participating in the formation of the metallacrown ring. In the literature, there are plenty of polynuclear trivalent metal complexes with salicylaldoxime as ligands, where the metal ion is Fe(III) , or, in most cases, Mn(III). Concerning the nuclearity of these complexes, the majority of the existing reports include dinuclear, trinuclear, , tetranuclear, , and hexanuclear complexes hosting diverse ligands such as amides, azides, , halides, perchlorate, and diverse carboxylate ligands. …”
