Synthesis and properties of castor oil‐based polyurethane containing short fluorinated segment

Abstract: This study successfully incorporated a short‐segment fluorine‐containing chain extender (2,2,3,3‐tetrafluoro‐1,4‐butanediol [TF]) into castor oil‐based polyurethane (COPU) to synthesize TF/COPUs. The interactions between TF and COPU components were identified by Fourier transform infrared and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopies, the results revealed that the increase in the TF content increased the van der Waals forces in CF…CO and the hydrogen bonding force in CF…HN. Atomic force microscopy indicated that … Show more

“…One of the applications of TPU could be possibly related to biocompatible tough hydrogels in medical devices, such as prosthetics. The important key that causes the hard and soft segments located in the topography of the PU parts is what determines the strength of the hydrogen bonds [134]. In addition, the average particle size can be changed or modified by varying the emulsification procedures, such as the revolution speed of the mixer or temperature in PU dispersions.…”

“…While, Wei et al used polydimethylsiloxane for end group modification of CO to prepare PU antismudge coatings, however the maximum WCA was 103.8° 41 . Li et al used a short fluorine segment as chain extender to develop CO‐based PU system, but the maximum WCA was 86.17° 42 . In another study by Allauddin et al, alkoxysilane group was partially introduced in the CO core moiety to prepare PUs as high‐performance hybrid coatings, but maximum WCA was 86.17° 43 .…”

“…Chen et al [ 19 ] prepared a CO-based polyurethane urea from CO and 4-aminophenyl disulfide and reported an increase in the mechanical properties and reprocessibility of the resulting films. A short chain fluorine containing chain extender 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoro-1,4-butanediol was used for the preparation of CO-based PU and a decrease in the tensile properties of the resulting films was observed as a result of increasing chain extender content [ 20 ]. In another work, cellulose acetate modified with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) was used as a hard segment for the improvement of mechanical and thermal properties of CO-based PU [ 21 ].…”
