Synthesis and physical properties of graft copolymers derived from phyllosilicates: I. The chrysotile and vermiculite derivatives

Abstract: In this work a new class of composite polymeric materials was described. They were obtained by grafting vinylic polymer chains onto the vinylic derivative of the phyllosilicates. These composite materials are characterized by outstanding mechanical properties, especially by a high modulus of elasticity. 257

“…67 The presence of unsaturated groups introduced by reaction with alkenylsilanes provides organic derivatives of sepiolite able to co-polymerize with unsaturated monomers or polymers. 68 Amino groups grafted on the surface of sepiolite have been recently used for the assembly of epoxy groups for reinforcement of nano-and bionanocomposites. 69 Other reagents such as isocyanates and epoxides may also yield organic derivatives of sepiolite by grafting reactions with Si-OH groups.…”
