Synthesis and Phase Behavior of Side-Group Liquid Crystalline Polymers in Nematic Solvents

Abstract: A model system of side-group liquid crystalline polymers (SGLCPs) with systematically varied molecular weight (from 78 to 420 kg/mol; PDI ≤ 1.16) and spacer length (8−12 atoms long) was prepared by polymer analogous synthesis. Matching the structure of the mesogenic units to that of the nematic solvent produced excellent solubility, even at molecular weights an order of magnitude greater than in prior literature on SGLCP solutions. Addition of up to 10 wt % polymer did not affect the ordinary and extraordinary… Show more

“…These covalent bonds enable the durable immobilization of the organic moieties and the introduction of hydrophobicity to the surface. Hydrophobic surfaces can be achieved when well-ordered fluoroalkyl or alkyl chains form low-energy surfaces because of the high density of CF 2 , CF 3 , CH 2 , or CH 3 moieties on surfaces. ,, To date, a few studies have reported attempts to tune the superhydrophobicity of DE functionalized with fluorosilane coupling agents. However, there do not appear to be any reports on tuning the hydrophobic properties of functionalized DE with nonfluorosilane coupling agents but only those of functionalized DE with fluorinated ones. , …”

“…Comb-like polymers having side chain crystalline structures have aroused considerable interest in surface science, on account of their well ordered structure and unique properties [15][16][17]. In particular, they enable polymer surfaces with the desired properties to be prepared using various combinations of polymer backbones and functional side chains [18][19][20][21].…”

“…All these hydrogels had bright spots whose number and size decreased with a decrease in the LC11 content in the copolymer. 24 The mesomorphic behaviors of the LC11 monomer and the PLC11 homopolymer have been examined by other researchers. They found that these materials exist in solid crystalline states at room temperature and exhibit smectic ordering at certain high temperatures.…”
