Synthesis and Optical Properties of Silver Nanobars and Nanorice

Abstract: Silver nanobars with rectangular side facets and an average aspect ratio of 2.7 have been synthesized by modifying the concentration of bromide added to a polyol synthesis. Subsequent rounding of nanobars transformed them into nanorice. Due to their anisotropy, nanobars and nanorice exhibit two plasmon resonance peaks, scattering light both in the visible and in the near-infrared regions. With a combination of discrete-dipole approximation calculations and single-nanoparticle spectroscopy, we explored the effe… Show more

“…25 In the present approach, bromide ions were used as the shape directing agent. [26][27][28][29][30] The bromide-mediated strategy is more favorable catalytically because the bromide species are only on the nanocrystal surface and are easily removed after synthesis by washing. In general, the metal salts ( Pt(IV) and Pt(II) ), the surfactants (PVP), and the shape directing agent (bromide ions) were dissolved in ethylene glycol at room temperature to form a precursor solution.…”

“…We demonstrate this effect with pixel sizes of 5 × 5 ÎŒm-two orders of magnitude smaller than the pixel area in most display technologies. The polarization-selective plasmon resonant nanorod structures (25,26) fabricated here represent a first step toward the fabrication of active liquid crystal-based pixels. The enhanced intensities, tunable peak positions, and strong polarization characteristics of these pixels make them immediately compatible with LCD-based displays, without the need for color filters or multiple polarizers.…”

“…The scope of molecular self-assembly from nature such as proteins [1] and nanobiocomposites [2] has been expanded to include man-made materials which have forms such as nanoscopic spheres [3], rods [4], ellipsoids [5], core/shell [6], and nanocages [7]. They can be produced using various types of materials such as metals [6], semiconductors [8], oxides [9], and polymers [10].…”
