“…In order to further confirm the observed directional magnetic anisotropy (χ c > χ ab ), we performed similar magnetic susceptibility measurements on different single crystal samples of Ba 3 Yb(BO 3 ) 3 and concluded that the results are reproducible (see supplementary materials). The magnetic moment (χ c ∼ 0.236 emu/mol-Yb-Oe and χ ab ∼ 0.493 emu/mol-Yb-Oe at 2 K) obtained for our grown single crystal, agrees with the reported value (∼ 0.31 emu/mol-Yb-Oe at 2 K), which had been collected on polycrystalline sample [19].…”

“…This is true for Nd 3+ , Dy 3+ , Er 3+ , and Yb 3+ , which are Kramers ions with an odd number of f -electrons and therefore symmetry-constrained to have an S eff = 1/2 doublet ground state at low temperatures. Examples may be found in refs ( 30 and 38 40 ). For non-Kramers ions (Tb 3+ , Ho 3+ ) this constraint does not apply if the local point group symmetry of the ion is lower than cubic, 41 as is the case here ( Ln 3+ ions in orthorhombic sites).…”

“…These results contribute to the rapidly growing set of lanthanide–alkaline earth borates with low-dimensional structures and novel magnetic properties, such as the Sr 6 Ln Fe(BO 3 ) 6 , Ba 3 Ln (BO 3 ) 3 , and A Ba Ln (BO 3 ) 2 ( A = Na + , K + , Rb + ) structural families. 31 , 38 , 48 51 Furthermore, the Ca 4 Ln O(BO 3 ) 3 structure type is compositionally flexible, which should allow for the realization of novel low-dimensional magnetic lattices through chemical substitution.…”
