Synthesis and magnetic behavior of an array of nickel-filled carbon nanotubes

Abstract: Highly-ordered arrays of Ni-filled carbon nanotubes have been fabricated by a second-order template method. First, an array of aligned carbon nanotubes was generated in a porous alumina membrane by catalytic pyrolysis of acetylene. The desired material, such as nickel, was then filled into the aligned carbon nanotubes by electrodeposition. The remarkable features of this method are: (i) high yield of metal-filled carbon nanotubes, and (ii) the wall thickness of the carbon nanotubes, and the length, diameter, a… Show more

“…The AAO-CNTs used can be either one-side open or both-side open. Foreign matters can be loaded into the carbon-deposited AAO template by using incipient wetness impregnation [40,42,[118][119][120][121], sublimation [122][123][124][125][126][127], or electrodeposition method [41,109,[128][129][130][131]. Since only the inner surface of the AAO-CNTs is exposed, the foreign matters would be selectively filled inside the hollow cores of CNTs.…”

“…[39][40][41] A detailed survey of the electronic structure of these compounds by soft X-ray measurements demonstrates that the electronic and crystal structures of the TM-cores is nearly the same as for the bulk compounds of these metals. [42] Significant changes in the magnetic properties of the TM/carbon interfaces without detected changes in the crystal and electronic structure of the metals require a systematic study of the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the TM/carbon interfaces.…”

“…The confined environments of nanotubes permit the formation of unique encapsulated low dimensional structures with unusual properties compared with the bulk with possible applications as nano-catalysts, electronic devices and magnetic tapes [4,5]. Most of the previously reported methods for the fabrication of these one-dimensional nanostructures involve multi-step processes, following CNT synthesis [6][7][8]. Various techniques have been developed for the synthesis of CNTs [9][10][11].…”
