Synthesis and fluorescence properties of star-shaped polymers carrying two fluorescent moieties

Abstract: A well-defined fluorescent star-shaped polymer containing two different fluorescent functionalities one in the main chain and another in the end group was designed and synthesized by combining atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and azide-alkyne click reaction. The star polymer with four arms was prepared from copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and 4-(2-(9-anthryl))-vinyl-styrene using ATRP. Subsequently the end group was modified with another fluorescent moiety by click coupling. The structure of… Show more

“…Other agents were obtained from Beijing Chemical Works. The star initiator Pt–Br was synthesized as in a previous report. , In brief, 2-bromo-2-methylpropionyl bromide (253 mg, 1.11 mmol) was added dropwise into the pentaerythritol solution (25 mg, 0.18 mmol) in dry tetrahydrofuran (THF, 20 mL) and triethylamine (TEA, 111.3 mg, 1.11 mmol) at 0 °C. After stirring for 24 h at room temperature, the reaction was quenched with methanol.…”

“…Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) is the most versatile living radical polymerization technique, as it furnishes the simplest route in the design and synthesis of a large variety of well‐defined polymers with predetermined molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution, and high degree of chain end functionalities . Since chain termination and chain transfer are absent in ATRP, it contains living chain termini which can initiate further polymerization whenever reactive monomer are available .…”

“…[17][18][19][20][21][22] Since chain termination and chain transfer are absent in ATRP, it contains living chain termini which can initiate further polymerization whenever reactive monomer are available. 23,24 It is therefore a popular method for synthesizing block copolymers since the polymer can be prepared in stages, each of which contains a different monomer.…”

“…ATRP is the most versatile CRP method owing to its exceptional properties like preparation of polymer with predetermined molecular weight, narrow polydispersity index, predetermined chain end functionality and tunable architecture. [18][19][20] Click chemistry is a powerful coupling approach which in combination with ATRP can be used for generation of polymers having almost all of the desired properties. [21][22][23][24][25] Click chemistry has been extensively used as a crosslinking reaction while designing self-healing polymers providing high healing efficiency.…”
