Synthesis and Evaluation of Surface Activity of Gemini Borate Surfactants Based on Glucose Moiety

Abstract: A series of Gemini borate surfactants were synthesized based on glucose molecule. Their chemical structures were confirmed using 1 H-NMR, 13 CNMR and mass spectroscopy. The surface activities of these Gemini amphiphiles were measured, including surface tension (γ), critical micelle concentration (cmc), effectiveness (П cmc ), efficiency (pC 20 ), maximum surface excess (Γ max ) and minimum surface area (A min ) at different temperatures 25, 35 and 45°C either in pure water or in water-ethanol mixture (10%).Also… Show more

“…Alternatively, cationic QA gemini surfactants may also contain a natural moiety [47,48,49]). Examples are: (i) glucose moieties containing gemini surfactant ( 1c ), where the spacer links the monomers at hydroxyl group of glucose moiety [49], as shown in Figure 1 and (ii) serine-based cationic gemini surfactant ( 1d ), where the spacer links two serine nitrogen atoms, quaternarized by substitution with a long alkyl chain [48], Figure 1.…”

“…The efforts of scientists resulted in obtaining gemini surfactants with different head groups that can be anionic (e.g., alkylbenzene sulfonate, phosphate, dicarboxylate) [ 16 , 17 , 18 ], cationic (e.g., quaternary ammonium, arginine, lysine, serine, imidazolium, morpholinium, pyridinium, piperidinium, pyrrolidinium) [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ], zwitterionic (e.g., betaine, heterogemini surfactants) [ 26 , 27 ], and non-ionic (e.g., 3-deoxy-D-glucitol, lactobionic acid residues) [ 28 , 29 ]. Moreover, plenty of different spacers were used such as hydrocarbons (saturated and unsaturated), stilbene units, p-xylenes, cyclohexane derivatives, disulfides, lysine esters, triazines, or even borates [ 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 ]. Formally, geminis that are asymmetric (e.g., those with a lysine spacer) are classified as geminoid or gemini-like surfactans [ 36 , 37 ].…”

“…Gemini borate surfactants based on glucose moiety were synthesized [80] through a reaction involving four steps as shown in Scheme 19. The first step is the synthesis of fatty chloride which was carried out by the reaction of fatty alcohol such as lauryl, cetyl, and stearyl alcohols with thionyl chloride.…”
