Synthesis and evaluation of poly(dioctyltin maleate‐styrene‐methyl acrylate) as a stabilizer for poly(vinyl chloride)

Abstract: A novel thermal stabilizer poly(dioctyltin maleate-styrene-methyl acrylate) [P(DOTM-St-MA)] was synthesized by radical solution polymerization with benzene as the solvent and 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator. The structure of terpolymer was characterized by FTIR and 1 H-NMR spectra, and thermal stability of the stabilizer was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Evaluation of [P(DOTM-St-MA)] as thermal stabilizer for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was measured by acidimeter, and the extent of c… Show more

“…Various methods have been tried to solve this problem, among which the addition of different thermal stabilizers is the most efficient and practical, and thus, further degradation is prohibited . During past decades, organic tin, lead salts, metal soaps, and liquid mixed metal stabilizers have been developed and have served as thermal stability additives for PVC . The principal function of these stabilizers is to neutralize the hydrochloric acid (HCl) evolved from the dehydrochlorination reaction of this polymer or replace the unstable chlorine atoms, such as the allyl chlorine atoms in PVC chains .…”

“…Salicylates, hydroxybenzophenones, and benzotriazole derivatives are used as commercial photostabilizers. Some scientists were directed to synthesize a new terpolymer, namely, poly[(dioctyltin maleate)/styrene/(methyl acrylate)] to be used as a novel thermal stabilizer for PVC [9]. Methacrylate‐based copolymers with 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate and 2,3‐epoxypropyl methacrylate were synthesized and investigated as costabilizers for PVC by Braun et al [10].…”
