Synthesis of Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Sorbents for Isolation of Parabens from Breast Milk

Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) are an invaluable asset in the development of many methods in analytical chemistry, particularly sample preparation. Novel adsorbents based on MMIPs are characterized by high selectivity towards a specific analyte due to the presence of a specific cavity on their polymer surface, enabling the lock–key model interactions to occur. In addition, the magnetic core provides superparamagnetic properties that allow rapid separation of the sorbent from the sample solution. Such a combination of imprinted polymers with a magnetic core has an innovative influence on the development of separation techniques. Hence, the present study describes the synthesis of MMIPs with 17β-estradiol used as a template molecule in the production of imprinted polymers. The as-prepared sorbent was used for a sorption/desorption study of five parabens from breast milk samples. The obtained results were characterized by sorption efficiency exceeding 92%, which shows the high affinity of the analytes to the functional groups on the sorbent. The final determination of the selected analytes was done with high-performance liquid chromatography using a fluorometric detector. The determined linearity ranges for selected parabens were characterized by high determination coefficients (r2 from 0.9992 to 0.9999), and the calculated limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for the identified compounds were low (LOD from 1.1–2.7 ng mL−1; LOQ from 3.6–8.1 ng mL−1), which makes their quantitative analysis in real samples feasible.

An imprinted amino-functionalized silica gel material was prepared by surface molecular imprinting technique combined with a sol-gel process on the supporter of activated silica gel and used as a solid-phase extraction for the extraction and determination of methyldopa (MTD). Non-imprinted silica adsorbent was synthesized without the addition of MTD using the same process. MTD-imprinted and non-imprinted silica adsorbents were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and the static adsorption experiments. The prepared MTD-imprinted silica sorbent demonstrated high adsorption capacity and significant selectivity for MTD in the presence of competitive substances. The maximum adsorption capacity of surface imprinted and non-imprinted silica adsorbent for MTD were 14565.81 and 2990.56 µg g -1 , respectively. The imprinted 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APS) modified silica gel adsorbent provided fast kinetics for the adsorption of MTD. In the operational mode of solid phase extraction (SPE), calibration curve of MTD solution was linear in the range of about 15 to 100 µg mL -1 . The limit of detection (LOD) and precision (RSD) during five replicates were 2.31 µg mL -1 and 5.69%, respectively. At last, the MTD-imprinted material was used as SPE adsorbent to determine the MTD in non-spiked and spiked pharmaceutical samples with satisfactory recovery higher than 94%.

Influence of Size and Shape of Silica Supports on the Sol–Gel Surface Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Selective Adsorption of Gossypol

The influence of various silica gel supports with different shapes and sizes on the recognition properties of surface molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) was investigated. MIPs for selective recognition and adsorption of gossypol were synthesized via the sol–gel process with a surface imprinting technique on silica gel substrates. 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) were chosen as the functional monomer and the cross-linker. The morphology and structure of the gossypol-MIPs were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and a standard Brunauer–Emett–Teller (BET) analysis. Results indicated that the surface imprinted polymer layer facilitated the removal and rebinding of the template, and thus, achieved fast binding kinetics. Compared with the MIPs prepared on irregularly shaped silica with a broad particle size distribution, the MIPs using regularly-shaped silica of uniform size showed higher imprinting factor (IF), and the MIP made with a relatively larger sized (60 μm) spherical silica, demonstrated higher adsorption capacity compared to the MIPs made with smaller sized, spherical silica. The MIP prepared with 60 μm spherically shaped silica, featured a fast adsorption kinetic of 10 min, and a saturated adsorption capacity of 204 mg·g−1. The gossypol-MIP had higher selectivity (IF = 2.20) for gossypol over its structurally-similar analogs ellagic acid (IF = 1.13) and quercetin (IF = 1.20). The adsorption data of the MIP correlated well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model, which implied that chemical adsorption dominated, and that multilayer adsorption occurred. Furthermore, the MIP exhibited an excellent regeneration performance, and the adsorption capacity of the MIP for gossypol only decreased by 6% after six reused cycles, indicating good application potential for selective adsorption of gossypol.
