Synthesis and evaluation of acrylate polymers for improving flow properties of waxy crudes

Abstract: SYNOPSISN-Alkyl acrylatecl and n-alkyl methacrylates were prepared by esterification of acrylic and methacrylic acids with two long-chain alcohol blends NAFOL 2022 and NAFOL 1822. The prepared monomers were characterized and polymerized individually. In addition, copolymers of n -alkyl acrylate-n-alkyl methacrylate, and n -alkyl methacrylate-vinyl acetate and a terpolymer of n-alkyl acrylate-acrylic acid-vinyl acetate were also synthesid These polymers were also characterized and then evaluated as flow improve… Show more

“…[14][15][16] Ethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers are among the additives that can be used since they present a good efficiency as crude oil flow modifiers and wax deposition inhibitor. [2,17,18] Lashkarbolooki et al [2] determined the influence of the EVA copolymer and its combination with chloroform (C), acetone (A), P-xylene (PX), and petroleum ether (PE) on the wax deposition thickness through the pipeline. To determine the effectiveness of the chemicals, the experiments performed with and without packages of chemical deposition inhibitors based on EVA and deposition thickness was obtained by heat-transfer method.…”

“…8,12 PODA is one of the most representative comb-like wax inhibitors ( Figure 1 and Table 1). A decamer of syndiotactic PODA (PAA1, MW 3276) was chosen as a model inhibitor representing the PODA.…”

“…7,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17] Acrylate and methacrylate polymers have been known for several decades as commercial flow improvers and wax inhibitors, 8,11,18,19 but none is sufficiently effective. Other more complex backbones containing nitrogen have shown some improvement.…”

“…This matrix holds a bulk of the liquid portion of crude within it and prevents its flow. To overcome such a problem, pour-point depressant additives (PPD) were used that modify the flow properties of crude oil (Gamal et al, 1994). These compounds modify wax crystal habits, size, and shape via nucleation, adsorption, cocrystallization and therefore improved wax solubility (Holder and Winkler, 1965).…”
