ABSTRACT.A novel homologous series RO-C 6 H 4 -CH=CH-COO-C 6 H 4 -CO-CH=CH-C 6 H 4 -OC 16 H 33 (n) para of chalconyl ester derivatives have been synthesized and studied with a view to understand and establish the effect of molecular structure on thermotropic liquid crystalline state of the substances and to provide novel liquid crystal (LC) materials to the researchers working in an unique multidisciplinary LC state of the substances. A novel chalconyl ester series consists of thirteen ( C 1 to C 18 ) homologues. C 5 to C 18 homologues are enantiotropically nematogenic without exhibition of smectogenic property, while the rest of the C 1 to C 4 homologues are nonliquid crystals (NLC). Transition temperatures and textures were determined by polarizing optical microscopy (POM) equipped with a heating stage. Textures of a nematic phase are threaded or schlieren. Cr-I/N and N-I transition curves of a phase diagram behaved in normal manner except negligible abnormality at C 14 homologue. Odd-even effect is exhibited by N-I transition curve. Analytical and Spectral data supported molecular structures of the homologues. Thermal stability for nematic is 97.33°C and the degree of mesomorphism vary maximum 24.0°C at C 5 homologue to minimum 11.0°C at C 10 homologue respectively. Latent transition temperatures (LTT) are determined for nonmesomorphic homologues C 4 (90°C) and C 3 (114°C) homologues by extrapolation method of transition curve. LC properties of a novel series are (thermometric) compared with structurally similar series.

A homologous series consisting-coo-central bridge liquid crystals has been synthesized and investigatedwith a vision to understanding and establishingthe effect of molecular structure in respect of molecular size, geometrical shape and polarizability on liquid crystalline properties. Unique series consisted of 12 members (C1-C16) of a series. Series consisting nematogenicandsmectogenic properties with respect to their carbon atoms. Novel members of series were selectively characterized and confirmed by elemental analysis, IR spectra, H1NMR spectra, DSC and POM.

Abstract. Homologous series RO-C 6 H 4 -CH=CH-COO-C 6 H 4 -CO-CH=CH-C 6 H 4 -OC 14 H 29 (P) of chalconyl novel derivatives have been synthesized and studied with a views to understand and establish the relation between molecular structure and the liquid crystal (LC) properties of thermotropic mesomorphs Series consists of thirteen homologues. Five homologues (C 1 to C 5 ) are nonliquid crystal (NLC) and the rest of the homologues (C 6 to C 18 ) are enantiotropically nematogenic without exhibition of smectic property. Transition temperatures and textures were determined by an optical polarizing microscope equipped with a heating stage (POM). Transition curves of a phase diagram(N-I and Cr-I/N) behaved in normal manner. N-I transition curve exhibited odd-even effect with negligible abnormality in its behaviour at the C 14 homologue. Thermal stability for nematic is 99.75 0 C.The degree of mesomorphism vary minimum 19 0 C at the C 6 homologue to maximum 28 0 C at the C 8 homologue. Analytical and spectral data confirms the molecular structures of the novel homologues. Evaluated thermal data of present novel series are compared with other structurally similar homologous series. Textures of Nematic phase are threded or schlieren.
