Synthesis and Crystal Structure of the Zinc Borate Zn3B4O9

Abstract: The new zinc borate Zn 3 B 4 O 9 was synthesized at high-pressure/ high-temperature conditions of 10 GPa and 1173 K in a Walkertype multianvil pressure device. It crystallizes in the space group P 1 (no. 2) with a = 5.5028(2) Å, b = 6.7150(3) Å, c = 7.8887(3) Å, α = 83.99(1)°, β = 73.38(1)°, γ = 74.75(1)°, V = 269.35(2) Å 3 , and two formula units (Z = 2) per unit cell. The structure was confirmed via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Zn 3 B 4 O 9 can be synthesized phase pure, which is shown with a Rietveld… Show more

“…These three molecules, cysteine (Cys), homocysteine (Hcy), and glutathione (GSH), illustrate the importance of sulfur-containing compounds in various physiological processes. Their roles range from structural support in proteins (Cys) to potential health markers and contributors to disease risk (homocysteine) to essential antioxidant and detoxification agents (glutathione). Biothiols exhibit robust redox properties and nucleophilicity, playing crucial roles as antioxidants that safeguard cells and tissues against oxidation caused by endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals. In addition to their role in scavenging ROS and radicals, biothiols in biological systems play active roles in apoptosis, signaling, cell growth, immune system regulation and protein biosynthesis …”

“…Until now, about 18 zinc borates are reported in the literature. Eight of them are anhydrous [13][14][15][16][17][18][19] and ten are hydrous borates. [9,[20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] From a structural point of view, (BO 3 ), (BO 4 ), (ZnO 4 ), (ZnO 5 ), and (ZnO 6 ) are present in these zinc borates (Table 1).…”
