Synthesis and Crystal Structure Determination of 2,2′-Sulfinyl-bis(4-methyl Phenol) and 2,2′-Thio-bis(4-methyl Phenol)

Abstract: 2,2 -Sulfinyl-bis(4-methyl phenol) 3 and it's thio derivative have been synthesized in this work. The reduction process of sulfoxide 3 to its thio derivative 5 was accomplished in the presence of Zn/AcOH/SiO 2 , under microwave irradiation. The structures have been confirmed by spectroscopic (IR, 1 HNMR, 13 CNMR) and single crystal x-ray diffraction methods. 2,2 -Sulfinyl-bis(4-methyl phenol) 3 crystallizes in the space group Cc of the monoclinic system with four molecules in the unit cell of dimensions a = 11… Show more

“…The X-ray crystallography of monomers that we reported previously confirmed the disturbed planarity character. 27 The crystallinity of all poly(sulfoxide ether amide)s was determined by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) scans. Diffractograms indicated that all of the polymers were almost completely amorphous.…”

“…The X-ray crystallography of monomers that we reported previously, confirmed the disturbed planarity. 27 In a continuation of these studies, this work deals with the synthesis of a new family of fluorinated ortho-sulfoxide bridged poly(ether amide)s based on novel aromatic diamine. It was expected that the incorporation of both the ortho-sulfoxide unit and the bulky CF 3 group in noncoplanar structure, would decrease polymer interchain interactions and generally disturb the coplanarity of aromatic units to reduce packing efficiency and crystallinity.…”

“…Poly(sulfoxide-amide) exhibited excellent solubility in polar solvents such as NMP, DMSO and DMF [24]. This probably is due to the presence of polarized SO bond in the polymer.…”

“…[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] Diastereotopic character was found in some of dibenzosulfoxide and sulfide crown ethers synthesized in [1:1] and [2:2] macrocycles respectively. [16][17][18][19] This character is due to transoid conformation which was found when X-ray crystallography was taken. It is interesting that Mague and his co-workers have observed a cisoid conformation of 1,1'-thiobis(2-naphthol) after X-ray analysis.…”
