Synthesis and characterization of sulfonated copolyethersulfones

Abstract: The present article deals with the synthesis and characterization of some sulfonated copolyethersulfones. The synthetic approach differs from the post sulfonation approach traditionally reported in the literature. The synthetic procedure is based on the use of sulfonated monomers which are then reacted with previously synthesized telechelic hydoxy-ended poly (ether sulpnone)s. Combining the MALDI-TOF MS and 1 H NMR analyses, with SEC-Viscometry and TGA measurements, we demonstrate a powerful tool for character… Show more

“…and lower production cost. A number of sulfonated aromatic polymers, such as poly(arylene ether sulfone)s,6–9 poly(arylene ether ketone)s,10–12 poly(phenylene)s,13–15 polyimides,16–19 and polybenzimidazoles,20 have been developed. Nevertheless, further improvement of ionomers properties, especially proton conductivity at low water content, is required.…”

“…Poly(arylene ether sulfone)s materials are a family of high‐performance engineering plastics with excellent properties, such as film formation, thermal and dimensional stability. Functional poly (arylene ether sulfone)s have been well studied as proton exchange membranes, gas‐separated membranes, adhesives and optical materials 33–35. Herein, we describe the synthesis of a new monomer, 2,6‐difluorobenzoyl aniline tetramer (DFAT) and its facile incorporation into poly(arylene ether sulfone) backbones, yielding copolymers with oligoaniline side chains.…”

“…TGA curves of the SPAEB and SPAEB oleum (SO 3 %65) copolymer membranes are shown in Figure 9. The first decomposition step around 300 ∘ C is attributed to the decomposition of the sulfone groups according to the literature [37,38]. Second thermal degradation steps occurring in temperature ranges 450-500 ∘ C should be due to polymer main chain.…”
