A new family of cycloaliphatic fused‐ring acrylic polymers based on 8‐hydroxymethyltricyclo[5.2.1.02,6]decane (TCD) has been synthesized by free‐radical polymerization. TCD‐methacrylate (TCD‐MA) was synthesized by reacting TCD with methacrylic acid in toluene via transesterification with p‐toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst. TCDMA was polymerized in toluene with benzoyl peroxide as a free‐radical initiator at 80 °C. Copolymers were synthesized by polymerizing TCDMA with styrene and methyl methacrylate. The composition of the comonomers was varied from 0 to 100%. Homo‐ and copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Molecular weight determination by gel permeation chromatography showed that the polymers were obtained in very high molecular weights in the range of Mn > 50,000 and Mw > 80,000 with relatively low polydispersity. The composition analysis of both the copolymer series were determined by 1H NMR. The thermal properties of the homo‐ and copolymers were studied with differential scanning calorimetry and all the polymers were found to be amorphous. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nylon 1010 and acrylate rubber (ACM) were prepared by melt blending. The effects of blending time and catalyst on the properties of the blends were studied. It was found that ester-amide exchange reactions between the Nylon 1010 and ACM occurred during melt processing. Long blending time and Tetrabutyl titanate (Ti(OBu) 4 ) as a catalyst could promote the reactions, and grafted copolymer Nylon-g-ACM was in situ generated as a compatibilizer during processing procedure. The tensile strength of the blends increased from about 12.0-15.0 MPa when the blending time increased from 10 to 30 min. The presence of Ti(OBu) 4 led to the decrease in melt flow index (MFI), independent of the blending time (30 or 60 min). Glass transition temperature and heat of fusion of the blends increased after addition of the catalyst. Rheological behavior analysis provided evidence of formation of Nylon-g-ACM graft copolymer. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the compatibility of the blends was improved by longer blending time and the addition of catalyst.

ABSTRACT:In this study, methyl oleate was bromoacrylated in the presence of N-bromosuccinimide and acrylic acid in one step. Homopolymers and copolymers of bromoacrylated methyl oleate (BAMO) were synthesized by free radical bulk polymerization and photopolymerization techniques. Azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenyl-acetophenone were used as initiators. The new monomer BAMO was characterized by FTIR, GC-MS, 1 H, and 13 C-NMR spectroscopy. Styrene (STY), methylmethacrylate (MMA), and vinyl acetate (VA) were used for copolymerization. The polymers synthesized were characterized by FTIR, 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Molecular weight and polydispersities of the copolymers were determined by GPC analysis. Ten different feed ratios of the monomers STY and BAMO were used for the calculation of reactivity ratios. The reactivity ratios were determined by the Fineman-Ross and Kelen-Tudos methods using 1 H-NMR spectroscopic data. The reactivity ratios were found to be r sty ϭ 0.891 (FinemanRoss method), 0.859 (Kelen-Tudos method); r bamo ϭ 0.671 (Fineman-Ross method), 0.524 (Kelen-Tudos method).
