Synthesis and characterization of SiO2–La2O3 gels obtained in a water-free environment

Abstract: SiO 2-La 2 O 3 binary oxide system was prepared by the sol-gel method without addition of strong polar solvents (e.g. water, alcohol) to the initial system. Changes in the surface and gel network structure were described as a function of the type and concentration of the second component that is lanthanum oxide. A series of samples with Si to La molar ratios of 1:0.1, 1:0.25, 1:0.5, and 1:1 were characterised by XRD, TG-TA, FTIR, and lowtemperature nitrogen adsorption measurements. Results of the investigation… Show more

“…Key features include the sharp oxirane absorption peak at 913 cm -1 and a number of peaks in the range 1035-1244 cm -1 that are associated with C-O bonds and which evince the presence of ether linkages in the resin. The only significant difference stems from the presence of the silica in the Nanopox E 470, which results in broad IR bands in the region 460 to 1080 cm -1 as a result of the stretching and the bending modes of Si-O-Si bonds [38][39][40]. Figure 2 shows a selection of representative FTIR data obtained from a number of cured samples.…”

“…In view of the earlier studies performed on similar binary gels [32][33][34][35][36] with Al 2 O 3 or SiO 2 as a matrix, a similar approach was applied in the design and synthesis of a catalyst with metal phase. The proposed method for the synthesis of a binary oxide support based on employing sol-gel processes, permitted the elimination of the presence of inorganic additives that could obscure the process of interaction between the metal phase precursor and the support surface.…”

“…Lanthanum (La) is a rare-earth (RE) element and is finding many technological and industrial applications in the form of lanthanum oxide (La 2 O 3 ), such as chemical catalysts, laser material, precision optical glasses, electrode material, light-emitting material (blue powder) and hydrogen storage material [178,179]. It is also employed in many biomedical applications, such as targeted drug delivery within the body, suppression of bacteria and viruses [180][181][182], binding agent for several proteins, calcium channel suppression, fluorescence dyes and ROS scavenging activity [181,183].…”
