New thermotropic liquid crystalline semi‐rigid homo‐ and copoly(ester‐imide)s composed of the 3,4:3″,4″‐p‐terphenyldicarboximide and/or the biphenyl unit and flexible aliphatic chains were prepared by polytransesterification using a dihexanol derivative of 3,4:3″,4″‐p‐terphenyldicarboximide and/or a dioxydihexanol of biphenyl as monomers. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, polarizing microscope observations and powder X‐ray analyses at various temperatures indicated that the homopolymer containing the 3,4:3″,4″‐p‐terphenyldicarboximide unit forms a smectic phase and the copolymers a nematic phase. It is suggested that the 3,4:3″,4″‐p‐terphenyldicarboximide unit acts as a good mesogen.
