Synthesis and characterization of random semi‐flexible thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(ester‐imide)s

Abstract: SYNOPSISA series of novel poly (ester-imide) s were prepared by the reaction of meta-and parasubstituted trimellitimide dicarboxylic diacid chlorides with various diols containing four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, and 12 methylene groups by a solution polymerization technique utilizing refluxing 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene as a solvent. The poly (ester-imide) s were characterized by dilute solution viscosity, infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and polarized light microscopy. The inhere… Show more

“…This phenomenon was common in many crystalline polymers. At the same time, the effective reinforcement of imide units have been observed in many copolyesters 19–23. In this work, the changes in mechanical properties of copolyesters might be owed to the compositive effects of the decreased dimension of spherulites and the enhancement of imide units.…”

“…The mixture was refluxed at 210 °C until there was no hydrogen chloride gas given out. Then prepolymer 1 was obtained as shown in Scheme after the products were filtrated, washed with hexane and dried in vacuum 23. In the second step, the esterification of SA (0.5 mol) and BD (1.1 mol) was carried out in a three‐necked flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer and a distillation column at 180 °C under nitrogen atmosphere.…”

“…mp. 178-1 80 "C. N,N'-Bis(6-hydroxyhexyl)-3,4 : 3",4"-p-terphenyldicarboximide (4) p-Toluenesulfonic acid (0,50 g) was added into a solution of compound 3 (0,Ol mol, 6,53 g) in methanol (60)/chloroform (40) of 100 mL and the mixture was refluxed for 5 h. After cooling the solution, the precipitated dihydroxy derivative 4 was collected by filtration, recrystallized three times from 1,4-dioxane and dried at 60 "C in vacuo overnight. Yield, 77%.…”

“…Copolymerization is a method used to overcome these limitations. Poly(ester-imide)s, [8][9][10] poly (siloxane-imide)s, 11,12 PUIs, [13][14][15] poly(ether-imide)s, [16][17][18][19] and poly(amide-imide)s 20-23 are the well-known copolymers of polyimides. As a result, by the introduction of imide groups into the polyurethane structure, it is possible to obtain a thermally more stable and easily processable polyurethanes.…”
