Synthesis and characterization of novel perylene dyes with new substituents at terminal-position as colorants for LCD color filter

Abstract: Six novel red perylene dyes were synthesized by modifying the bay-and terminal-positions of perylene main body to improve the optical performances of liquid crystal display (LCD) color filters. The absorption properties, solubility in industrial solvents and thermal stabilities of the dyes were examined to evaluate the dyes for dye-based LCD color filter. Mill bases and spin-coated color filters were formulated and fabricated using the synthesized dyes. Transmittance, dye aggregation and thermal stabilities of… Show more

“…However, a great need for improved optical properties such as higher contrast ratio or increased brightness has prompted the development of dye-based color filters. [36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43] Higher concentration of the coloring material will be one solution to improve chromatic © 2020 The Japan Society of Applied Physics SIIC01-5 purity, but the approach is quite difficult for a conventional photolithographic composition because the composition has to be loaded with a considerable amount of an alkaline soluble resin. The template-guided process enables highly concentrated color filter patterns from the simple composition, which does not include such a resin.…”

“…22,23 However, PDIs display poor solubility and very weak uorescence owing to the aggregation of perylene chromophores, which limits their applications. 24,25 Perylene tetra-(alkoxycarbonyl) (PTAC) is structurally related to PDIs but has four electron decient carboxylic ester chains connected to the perylene core. It shows excellent uorescence and good solubility in organic solvents.…”

“…Recently, organic dyes that are highly soluble in industrial organic solvents have been widely developed for use in hightechnology applications [1][2][3][4]. However, water-soluble organic dyes are still extensively used in many industrial fields [5][6][7].…”
