Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Azobenzene Methacrylate Monomers

Abstract: New methacrylic monomers containing pendant azobenzene structures have been prepared by reacting azobenzene assemblies possessing phenolic functions with methacryloyl chloride. The most favorable synthetic routes are described together with the yields obtained. The new monomers have been purified and completely characterized by elemental analysis and melting points, as well as by recording their UV, FT-IR and NMR spectra.

“…Five azo-monomers (the synthesis and characterization is described elsewere 13 ) were tested in free radical copolymerization with 3-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane using a feed molar ratio of 1: 3 = Mx: MEMO, as shown in Scheme 1. In a similar run, 4.7 mmole of MEMO were added to a well degassed solution of 1.56 mmole of Mx and 0.09 mmole AIBN in 6 ml of dried DCB.…”

“…The parent azobenzene molecule can bond very different chemical groups in order to adjust the optical properties and response time of a target material [21]. These substitutions will also dramatically change the spectroscopic properties, affecting the relative position and intensity of the absorption bands in UV-Vis spectra.…”

“…Concerning sensing properties, these were studied in pyrene containing azopolyurethanes by means of fluorescence spectroscopy [6]. On the other hand, the photophysical properties of azobenzene have been combined with the thermal stability of inorganic moieties such as siloxanes (-Si-O-Si-) for the preparation of new colored hybrid networks with enhanced thermal properties [7,8]. Another interesting example is the use of benzoxazines containing azobenzene in the synthesis of cross-linked polymer networks with high thermal stability [9].…”
